Caitlyn’s internship at TriMark USA brings together her love of marketing and computer science.

Last spring, Caitlyn Gemma heard from a family friend that TriMark USA, a national foodservice equipment distribution company, was looking for an intern. She immediately sent in her resume and portfolio, which was filled with pieces from her graphic design course at Simmons. Gemma, Class of 2017, was only a freshman at the time and was pleasantly surprised when she was offered the position of Corporate Marketing Intern.  She continues to work in this position.

“I ended up landing an internship over seniors, and I was only ending my freshman year. All my hard work and trips to the Career Education Center paid off,” says Gemma, a double major in Marketing and Computer Science. “I constantly relate my coursework to my internship work here. I love this because I can utilize my computer science knowledge while working in marketing. As I learn more about both fields, I realize that there is so much more to do and that my options are truly unlimited.”

Gemma’s internship work entails a wide variety of tasks such as writing e-mail blasts, using marketing software, proof-reading for copywriters, and detecting and fixing errors in the company database, which contains over 153,000 accounts. However, she has learned more than just technical skills, “I’ve learned how to dress professionally, how to problem-solve, how to appropriately speak with my superiors-- the list goes on.”

Gemma will complete her work in August, but she has some words of advice for students looking for an internship, “Don’t be afraid to take risks or to make mistakes. Always learn from everything you do, and be optimistic.”
