Dr. Em Claire Knowles has been voted to the Board

Dr. Em Claire Knowles, Assistant Dean for Student and Alumni Affairs of Simmons SLIS, has been elected to the board of Beta Phi Mu at a meeting on Saturday, June 25 at the American Library Association Annual Conference 2016 in Orlando, FL.  Knowles has served as advisor to the Beta Beta Chapter of Beta Phi Mu for 19 years. Her areas of interest include diversity, social justice, library outreach, and employment trends in the LIS field. Her role at Simmons College is complemented by activities in the American Library Association, where she serves as a councilor of its governing body, an elected trustee of the Freedom to Read Foundation, an active member of both the Massachusetts Black Librarians Network, Inc. and the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. Last spring, Dr. Knowles was honored with the Sojourner Truth Award given by the Boston & Vicinity Club, an affiliate of the National Association of the Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. She is a past chair of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, the voice of the library community in the Commonwealth, and a current trustee of the Massachusetts State Library.
