Ask Admission: Ellen Johnson

Ellen Jhonson

Ellen is the Head of Admission at Simmons. We asked her a few questions!

Where are you from? Where did you go to college?

I'm from Minnesota. I went to College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN: BA in education, minor in music. Then I went to Boston University: MA - MEd in policy, planning and administration with a higher education concentration.

What's your favorite thing about Simmons?

That we are a women's college at the undergraduate level and women's-centered college overall. Our mission of empowering women to be leaders in every facet of their lives makes us special. As a woman, I also love that we have many strong woman in leadership roles at the college to serve as role models and mentors for students, staff and faculty.

What's your favorite part of your job?

There are very few things in life that compare to sharing the joy of a college admittance with a student and their family. Being the one that signs each and every acceptance letter that leaves our office and ends up in a student's hands is pretty fantastic.

What should students look for when choosing a college?

Find the place where you feel you fit -- that means where you can see yourself living, where you will feel comfortable, a place you can be you. Choose a place that you can see yourself being, living, studying and working for the next 4 years. Not the place that your friends are going or where your parent went or that has a big name -- if you don't feel comfortable the moment you walk on campus don't go even if others are thinking that is the right place for you.

If we visited your office, what would we see?

Way too many papers strewn about. I'm the organized chaos type!

What's your favorite thing to do in Boston?

Go to Red Sox games. There is no place in the world like Fenway Park! I love being near the ocean, you can be in the middle of the city and 10 minutes later sitting on the beach watching the waves roll in.

What music are you currently listening to?

Josh Ritter, The Hold Steady, Regina Spektor, The Avett Brothers, and of course, Ryan Adams 1989.

Favorite movie?

Saved!

What's your favorite local lunch?

Neighborhood Cafe and Pavement Coffeehouse.

What's your dream vacation?

I studied abroad on the western coast of Ireland during college and my dream vacation is to go back there for a few weeks to enjoy the beautiful countryside.
