Mei Yue ’89GS partnered with women and girls to create opportunities for change

In the years after Mei Yue ’89GS completed her master’s degree in English, she worked all over the world to partner with women and girls to advance nutrition, food security, and health initiatives, as well as increase access to financing for rural business development. 

Her work with Save the Children and the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) took her to rural China, North Korea, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Myanmar, South Sudan, and Ghana, before she settled into retirement in her native China in 2011.

Shortly after receiving her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Rochester in 1995, Mei helped make preparations for the United Nations World Conference on Women in Beijing. At the same time, she was completing post-doctoral research on microfinance and income generating activities for rural women with the Institute of Sociology and Anthropology at Peking University. 

In the years that followed, Mei worked on a variety of international development projects, including raising awareness regarding the importance of nutrition and education among women and girls, HIV/AIDS prevention among teenagers, sustainable farming, and food-aid programs to assist vulnerable families in underdeveloped areas and in emergency situations caused by either natural disasters or manmade conflicts. 

In many ways, she credits her Simmons education with establishing the foundation for a meaningful career.

“In addition to the language proficiency and analytical skills I developed at Simmons, there was also a great deal of attention toward women’s rights and equal development opportunities,” she says. “Those elements of my program in particular played an important role in what I was able to achieve in my career.”
