Borrowing

Students must present a Simmons College ID to check out materials. Please contact the Circulation Desk at circulation@simmons.edu or 617-521-2780 with questions about borrowing, renewing, and returning Library materials.

Checkout Location

Library materials may be checked out at: the Circulation Desk on Level 1.

Loan Periods & Overdues
  • Books: 28 days with 3 renewals
  • Diversions Books: 28 days with 3 renewals
  • DVDs and VHS Cassettes: 7 days with 1 renewal
  • Audio CDs: 7 days with 3 renewals
Overdues

The Library emails reminder notices for overdue items. When an item is 45 days overdue, an additional replacement charge will be billed to your Library account. These charges will be cleared if the item is returned. Outstanding charges on your library account may affect your ability to register for classes, graduate, or obtain copies of transcripts, or may be referred to the Dean of Student Life as violations of the Simmons College Honor Code.

Renewing & Returning

To renew items, log in to the Library Catalog with your Simmons username and password. Items that other Library users have requested and other high-demand items are unavailable for renewal.

Items may be returned:
  • To the Circulation Desk
  • To the book drop in Lefavour Hall, Level G (across from the restrooms)
  • By mail to:

Course Reserves

Books, media, journal articles, and other materials required for coursework can be placed in the Course Reserve Collection by instructors.

To see which items have been place on reserve for your class visit the Course Reserves website for more information. For questions or problems, please contact the Reserves staff at reserves@simmons.edu or 617-521-2796.

Using the Course Reserves system
  1. Log in to in the Simmons Course Reserves system with your Simmons username and password.
  2. Click on "Search Classes" on the navigation menu on the left side of the page.
  3. Search for your class (searching by "Course Number" or "Department" yields the most accurate results.
  4. When you find your class, click on "Add Course." You will be prompted to enter a password for the class (your instructor will provide the class password).
Borrowing Course Reserves & Accessing E-Reserves

Course Reserves may be checked out at the Circulation Desk. Please bring the call number for the item (available in the Reserves system) to the Circulation Desk.

Instructors choose the loan period for Course Reserves: 3 hours (for in-library use only), 24 hours, or 7 days. The maximum number of Course Reserve items you may have checked out concurrently is:

  • One 3-hour Course Reserve item (or five 3-hour Children's Literature Reserve items)
  • One 24-hour Course Reserve item
  • One 7-day Course Reserve item
Course Reserve items incur late fees of $0.25 per hour.

 

E-Reserves

Many Course Reserve materials such as articles and book chapters are available electronically. To access e-reserves online, log in to the Course Reserves system with your Simmons username and password.


Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

If there are materials that you need for academic work that the Library does not own, we may be able to borrow them for you from another library. To place interlibrary loan requests, log in to the ILL system with your username and password.

Renewing ILLs

Log in to the ILL system to request a renewal. A renewal must be requested before an item is due. Not all libraries grant renewals.

Overdue ILLs

Shortly before its due date, you will receive a courtesy notice reminding you that your ILL item is due soon. After 30 days, you may be billed for the item. Please note that lending libraries' replacement fees are often $80 or more. Unpaid ILL fees may affect your ability to register for classes, graduate, or obtain copies of your transcript or may be referred to the Dean of Student Life as violations of the Simmons College Honor Code.


Study Space

The Simmons Library offers a spacious and modern environment that accomodates a both individual and collaborative learning. Comfortable chairs, large tables, and study carrels are available throughout the Library.

Group Study Rooms
There are 14 group study rooms available for Simmons students. Some rooms contain technology such as DVD/VHS players and projectors.


To reserve a room, log in to the Library Study Rooms system with your Simmons username and password.

  • Group study rooms are for use by Simmons students only.
  • Group study rooms are for use by groups, not individuals.
  • Simmons students may reserve group study rooms for up to 3 hours per day.
  • Reservations may be made up to 14 days in advance.

Individual Study Space

Quieter areas for individual study include:

  • Study carrels on Level 2 and Level G
  • Media Viewing & Listening Room on Level G

You can also reserve a study room in the School of Management Building for either individual or group use.


Access to Cultural Institutions

Museum of Fine Arts
  • Free admission with Simmons ID (additional fees for special exhibits)
  • Free Days: Wednesday nights after 4 pm, admission is by voluntary contribution (suggested donation $22)

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum
  • Free admission with Simmons ID (additional fees for special exhibits)
  • Complimentary admission to special museum lectures, as well as to the special monthly series, Gardner After Hours on the 3rd Thursday of every month
  • Tickets available for $10 to "Music at the Gardner Concerts" held Thursdays and Sundays
