Our Worldcat access is switching to Worldcat Local!  What does this mean?

It means Worldcat is now branded to fit our Library.  It means you can search our catalog and resources from off-campus without having to login to the network (though you'll need to login to access e-resources).  It means the Library is, once again, at your fingertips!!

Watch for more features as we expand our new WorldCat system!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

The Library's in the spirit -- check out our BOOOOk display, which is chock-full of Halloween history and scary books and films.

Keep an eye out for costumed librarians, and be sure to stop by Circulation, Reference, Technology, and the Writing Center on Monday to trick-or-treat!

If you aren't quite sure where to begin your research, or you need background information on a topic, try Reference Universe.  This e-resource is great because you can search our entire collection of reference sources: electronic materials AND all those books on the Reference Collection shelves.  From the Encyclopedia of Folk Heroes to The Vocabulary and Concepts of Organic Chemistry, Reference Universe allows you to search the materials Simmons actually owns, with search results including article titles and page numbers, so you'll be able to get started on your project right away!

According to the official website, "Food Day seeks to bring together Americans from all walks of life...to push for healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way."  Come see the display in the Library, and then check out the other Food Day events on campus on Monday, October 24, including a bake sale outside the Fens.  For more information about Food Day, see the website at: http://foodday.org/

National Reading Group Month!

October is National Reading Group Month!  NRGM "salutes reading groups. It fosters their growth and promotes the love of literature. It's an opportunity for reading groups to reflect on their accomplishments and plan for the future -- the perfect time to join or start a group."  Come to the Library to check out some of the fascinating reads we have on display!

Visit http://www.nationalreadinggroupmonth.org/ for more information.

Try Education Research Starters. Each article contains an Overview to explain a topics' relevance to education, Further Insights/Applications to demonstrate how the topic relates to everyday teaching and administration, a Viewpoints/Issues Discourse section that shares various perspectives on a topic, a glossary of Terms & Concepts which can then be used as keywords for further searching, a Bibliography and a Suggested Reading list. Direct links to Bibliography and Suggested Reading items available from the same database publishers are also provided.

In commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire -- considered the deadliest industrial tragedy of its time, -- come see the book display in the Library, and go to the Boston Workmen's Circle multi-media performance "The Cloth From Which We Are Cut" Tuesday, Oct. 18, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Simmons College.

The stirring performance portrays the poverty and struggles of various immigrant communities in the early 1900s by combining historical narrative with the folk music that was born in the sweatshops. The catastrophe had an enormous impact on both women's and workers' rights.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the Linda K. Paresky Conference Center at Simmons College, 300 The Fenway in Boston.
