Julia Gillard

Former Prime Minister of Australia

New Speaker

Julia Gillard is the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of Australia. Taking the reins during a particularly turbulent period in the country's history, she made access to quality education the top priority of her government's economic development agenda. In her engaging and candid memoir, My Story, Gillard reflects on her years in public service and the challenges of realizing her ideals at the highest political levels. After leaving office, Gillard took her advocacy for education to the international stage as a Distinguished Fellow with the Brookings Institution's Center for Universal Education, chair of the Global Partnership for Education, and Patron of Camfed (Campaign for Female Education). In addition, she serves as Chancellor of Dūcere Global Business School, an Honorary Professor at the University of Adelaide, and a member of the Board of Governors of the Committee for the Economic Development of Australia. Most recently, Gillard was named inaugural chair of the Global Institute for Women's Leadership at King's College.
