Background
Infectious diseases continue to exert a heavy toll on human health, even in industrialized countries. In the USA, 25% of all physician visits are the result of infections, which translates into a huge economic burden. Not to mention the countless mild or asymptomatic infections that do not result in a doctor visit.
Many changes in society can have an impact on infectious disease spread in our homes and community settings, including:
- Increasing population & life expectancy
- Changes in urbanization
- Grouping of susceptibles
- Increased home care
- Increased immunosuppression
- Antibiotic resistance
- Changes in food and water consumption
- Increased travel
- Changes in cleaning practices
There is a growing recognition of the importance of hygiene practice as a means of preventing infections in
- private homes
- schools
- long-term care
- food service
- sports, leisure and hotel industry
The Simmons Center for Hygiene & Health has been established to serve the needs of hygiene and health and to develop the science of hygiene in the community. Next… Our Vision for the Center
