Heather Hedden has over 15 years of experience in the field of taxonomies. She worked as a controlled vocabulary editor for eight years at the periodical index and reference database publisher Gale (formerly Information Access Company, now Cengage Learning), as the taxonomist with the enterprise search software vendor Viziant Corporation, as a taxonomy consultant for corporate clients of Earley & Associates, and as the taxonomy manager at First Wind. Heather has also done freelance taxonomy development, indexing, and training through her own business, Hedden Information Management.

Heather is active in the American Society for Indexing, having served as vice president and president of the New England Chapter and also in leading the Web Indexing SIG and founding and leading the Taxonomies & Controlled Vocabularies SIG. She has also published numerous articles and given many conference presentations and workshops on taxonomy and indexing topics. Heather has also written two books: The Accidental Taxonomist (Information Today, 2010) and Indexing Specialties: Web Sites (Information Today Inc./American Society for Indexing, 2007) and the chapter "Controlled Vocabularies, Thesauri, and Taxonomies" in Index It Right! Advice from the Experts, Volume 2, edited by Janet Perlman and Enid L. Zafran (Information Today Inc./American Society for Indexing, 2010).
