Title: Director, Department of Libraries and Information Services, City of Pasadena, CA


Jan W. Sanders is the Director of Libraries and Information Services for the City of Pasadena, a 10-branch system with oversight of a $12m annual budget and 130+staff. As director, she serves on the executive committee to the City Manager. Her expertise is in recruitment, training, direction and the efficient use of staff. She is skilled in strategic planning by using the Public Library Association's (PLA) theories and methods of compiling and using community data through automated systems and information technologies; and building community relations, coalitions and accountability for library programs, government models and citizens.

Jan's 35-year professional experience in library management led her to live in five states. She is active in the American Library Association, where she served in a variety of roles including president of the Public Library Association, a premier division of ALA. She has extensive community leadership experience with arts & culture and civic organizations. She currently serves as a board member for Leadership Pasadena and in 2009, will join the Pasadena Museum of History's board of directors. Jan earned a BS degree in English Education from Northwest Missouri State University and a MLS degree in Public Librarianship from Indiana University, Bloomington. She also served as adjunct faculty and guest speaker for the University of Oklahoma, Graduate Library School and the University of Washington, School of Information Sciences.
