Simmons College

Susan Lum supervises students in LIS 498 and and LIS 499 the Practicums for Pre K-8 and 7-12. She is a retired Library Teacher and Lead Librarian with more that thirty years of experience in all levels of school librarianship: elementary, middle and high school.  A  1974 graduate of Simmons School of Library and Information Science, she has maintained her ties with Simmons acting as a Supervising Practioner in the urban and suburban school districts of Lexington, Cambridge and Chelsea. She continues to work part time for the Newton Public Schools Department of Technology of Instructional Technology.

Her interest in libraries began as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Sarawak, Malaysia, when she created a library for the Divisional Education Department. The importance and interest in libraries as a part of the educational process was immediately apparent to her and she early on developed an abiding interest in school libraries. When she returned to the U.S, Susan  was able to be part of a unique program at Harvard University where she worked at Littauer Library as an intern and gained work experience and financial help while pursuing her MLS.  

Her work as a school library teacher has focused on the integration of library programs into the fabric of overall school curriculum and making students and teachers aware of the importance of developing reading, critical thinking, and information skills.
