GSLIS Tech Lab Workshop: Zotero
When: Wednesday, October 13, 2010, 1:00-2:00pm
Where: GSLIS Tech Lab, Boston Campus
The GSLIS Tech Lab in Boston is pleased to announce that Professor Candy Schwartz will be leading a workshop on Zotero.
Zotero is one of many reference managers, like Refworks and EndNote. Reference managers let you collect bibliographic citations on the fly (while you are doing research), organize, tag, and maintain them, use them in documents, and then print bibliographies in almost any style manual format. Zotero does all of this, and also synchs your citations from all of your browsers to a server in the "could", lets you create an online profile, and encourages you to identify and follow the citation gathering of other users.
In this workshop you will learn how to use Zotero (with its Firefox extension) effectively, and how to create a Zotero profile and follow other users.
Please register through Eventbrite through one of the following links:
(10/13 session) http://fa10z1.eventbrite.com/

Please RSVP by Oct 8, 2010: http://bit.ly/aJpStu
Lecture Description
The Library of Alexandria is regarded as the "Eighth Wonder of the Ancient World," and the first great library in the history of Western Civilization. The scrolls and codices on its shelves provided the medium by which scientists, philosophers, poets, historians and musicians of antiquity enriched human experiences with their research and creativity. Its collections embodied the genius of classical Greece, and its loss is the greatest disaster in the history of learning.
Professor Jameson will focus on the origin and history of the Library, on its collections and arrangement, on the scholar-librarians, and on its disappearance, as well as on the revival of the Biblotheca Alexandrina whose purpose is to restate the universal legacy of the ancient library in modern terms.
About Dr. Jameson
Professor Jameson holds a Ph.D. in history from Harvard University and a doctorate in history from the University of Paris (Sorbonne), a master of science degree in library science from Simmons College, and a certificate in archival management from Radcliffe College. He retired after forty-eight years of academic teaching (Byzantine, Near Eastern, African History) and administration at Harvard where he was Senior Tutor, and the University of California, Berkeley where he was Assistant Vice Chancellor. He has returned to school to pursue a degree in theology.
He is Director Emeritus of Books for Asia of the Asia Foundation and President Emeritus of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. He served for many years as consultant to the American publishing industry for charitable book projects in Africa and Asia, and he was advisor to the National Libraries of Nigeria and China.

GSLIS Tech Lab Workshop: Zotero
When: Tuesday, October 19, 2010, 1:00-2:00pm.

THE MATERIAL PRESENCE OF THE ARCHIVE & EARLY SOCIAL WORK
Adrienne Chambon, Ph.D.
University of Toronto
Director, Ph.D. Program
Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work
How can we approach archives as material, multi-faceted objects that can reveal a multiplicity of voices and views within a single agency, and illuminate the heterogeneity of the discipline in the early phase of the profession? Drawing on the early archives of a Toronto childcare agency that celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2009, a project funded by the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada, Dr. Chambon will discuss interpretation, audience, dimensions of media, as well as strategies in conducting archival work for an agency.
Dr. Chambon's scholarship has moved from early research and teaching on immigration and refugees to transnational social work. She is very interested in expanding the scope of social work theory, drawing from interdisciplinary perspectives in social sciences, the humanities and the arts. Of great interest is the exploration of how we can experience theories as embodied practices of knowledge. Her critical interpretive research links material and discursive activities. She is currently involved in two main directions: what art practices can bring to social work for social change; and a growing examination of a history and memory of the social work discipline.

GSLIS Technology Webinar series: Introduction to Business Taxonomies
When: Friday, November 5, 2010, 11:30am-12:30pm
Where: S-251B (Science Building), Simmons College, Boston campus
The GSLIS Technology Webinar series has scheduled an ASIS&T sponsored event for Friday, November 5th at 11:30am - 12:30pm in room S-251B (Science Building). It is the first part of a four part Taxonomy webinar series. The subject of this initial session is, "Introduction to Business Taxonomies."
This webinar series focuses on the design and management of business taxonomies for the storage of information within systems, as well as the overall findability through search and browse of the information your end users seek.
Today's business users work with a range of information management tools designed to capture and provide access to critical business information. However, that information is of little value if users can't find what they need. Business taxonomies can provide solutions to an organization's knowledge management challenges. Although the concept of taxonomies is not new, organizations are beginning to focus increased attention on the design and development of intuitive and sustainable taxonomies that will serve their end users by making it easy to find the information they need in a single place. Today's users have come to expect a simple way to both search and browse for their information, but still many organizations do not know where to begin in the design of such a system.
The first session in the series will provide an introduction to taxonomy and metadata benefits, design concepts, and strategies. The subsequent sessions will detail methodologies on 1) how to run taxonomy design workshops within your own organization, 2) how to design taxonomies from start to finish, and 3) how to ensure the appropriate maintenance and management of those taxonomies over time.
Additional information is available on this web site:
http://www.ppc.com/Pages/TaxonomyWebinar2010.aspx
Here is information about all four sessions, which will take place in S-251B (Science Building):

GSLIS Technology Webinar Series Presents: Meta-Library
When: Tuesday, November 9, 2010, 12:30 p.m.
Where: GSLIS Tech Lab
Meta-Library
Kim Dulin & David Weinberger, co-directors of the Harvard Library Innovation Lab at Harvard Law School
As more and more content moves into the cloud, libraries are decreasingly the single place to go to find the material you need for your research (except for rare books and special collections). But libraries know a huge amount about their contents. This metadata is becoming even more valuable as research moves online, since now it can be deployed to help scholars and researchers discover, understand, and share what they need to know. The co-directors of the Harvard Library Innovation Lab at Harvard Law School -- Kim Dulin and David Weinberger -- along with members of the Lab will demonstrate their lead project (ShelfLife) and talk about the Lab's proposed multi-library metadata server (LibraryCloud).
About David
David Weinberger writes about the effect of technology on ideas. He is that author of "Small Pieces Loosely Joined" and "Everything Is Miscellaneous," and is the co-author of "The Cluetrain Manaifesto." He is currently working on a book, tentatively titled "Too Big to Know" about the Internet's effect on how and what we know. Dr. Weinberger is a senior researcher at the Berkman Center. He is also co-director of the Harvard Law School Library Lab, and is a Franklin Fellow at the United States Department of State. He has doctorate in philosophy.
About Kim
Kim Dulin is the Associate Director for Collection Development and Digital Initiatives at the Harvard Law Library. She is also Co-Director (along with David) of the Harvard Library Innovation Lab. Kim has been a librarian at Harvard for the past seven years and prior to that was a law librarian at Northeastern and Boston University. She has also taught legal writing at BU Law and appellate advocacy at Northeastern. Many moons ago she was a Legal Services Attorney in the Missouri Ozarks.

GSLIS Technology Webinar Series Presents: Building Community: From Distribution to Engagement
When: Tuesday, November 16, 2010, 2PM
Where: GSLIS Tech Lab
Some view the public library as a central purchasing and distribution center of books, movies, and music. Today, that content is increasingly digitized and consumed on gadgets carried in our homes, backpacks, purses and pockets. Distribution remains germane and yet, libraries are well positioned to extend beyond the limits of this role, to facilitate what John Seeley Brown and Paul Duguid called the social life of information. Social media technology presents libraries with new opportunities to enhance and extend the distribution model, to empower and engage patrons to build relevant and vibrant communities via the library. Moderator Chrystie Hill and presenters Helene Blowers and Nancy Dowd will engage you in a discussion of how public libraries build community with technologies and programs, new and old. Join us for this special webinar presented in collaboration with ALA TechSource.
More can be read about it on this web site: http://bit.ly/alawebinar

Author Marilyn Johnson will be at the GSLIS West office to speak and read from her book, "This Book is Overdue: How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us," on Saturday, March 26, at 4:30 p.m. Snacks will be served.
Johnson was inspired to write this book because she wanted to find out what it's like to be a librarian in a world of too much information.
Her journey takes her, among other places, to the reference desk of the New York Public Library, the activist librarians of Radical Reference who provide assistance at political demonstrations around the country and internationally, and into the virtual world of Second Life, and wonders if, with today's constant change, exploding technology, shrinking budgets, growing numbers of the baffled...could there be a better spot than behind the librarians' desk to watch the digital age unfold?
The answer is an emphatic "no," Johnson says. "When I hear this snarky question (and I hear it everywhere): Are librarians obsolete in the Age of Google? All I can say is, 'are you kidding?...'"
Alums, families, friends, etc., are welcome to attend.

GSLIS Book Group
When: Saturday, July 16, 2011, 12:45 PM
Where: Palace Rd. 2nd Floor, Faculty Staff Lounge
For all of you enjoying your summer - or needing a break from it! - just a quick reminder that we have two in-person meetings next week, for those near the Palace Road building! Everyone is invited to attend, to share book ideas, Reader's Advisory suggestions, or just the fun of talking about a fun book. The book we are reading this month is "Bossypants" by Tina Fey. (We are in the Dewey 700s: Arts this month, as it is the 7th month.)
We meet:
- Tuesday, July 12
- Saturday, July 16
Both of them will begin at 12:45, in the Faculty Staff Lounge, 2nd floor of Palace Road. This is at the opposite end of the floor from the Student Lounge, and I'll have up a sign.
Everyone should feel free to bring your lunch to enjoy, and there will be cookies or other snacks. (Books and snacking go together very well, I think!)
As always, these are very casual groups; you can feel free to drop in and out as your schedule permits - we will be happy to see you at any point. You can read the book beforehand, or just come to share in the conversation.
Next month's topic is the Dewey 800s category: Literature. There are surely lots of good suggestions we can come up with for a good book to read in this topic, so share them all!! Our general criteria are that it be relatively new (so everyone is ready to discuss these books with current or future patrons), not overly depressing, and available in print, audio, and ebook formats. Some good suggestions have already come in, but we can always use more.
Come share in the summer time reading fun, take a break and enjoy yourself, and talk about books for a while!

This is a great opportunity for us to share what we have learned with students who could not attend NEA or the tour. Furthermore, this is a great chance for us to discuss our "take aways" from NEA. Some questions to consider are: What were the highs and what could have been better at NEA's fall meeting? What did we learn from the presentations and how can we use what we learned in our classes or at our jobs? Lastly, what did this experience teach you and how would you approach NEA's next meeting?
As usual, all students in the GSLIS program are welcome and should feel free to bring any questions, comments, or concerns that they have about the archives profession. If you have any questions about this event or our future events, please email Amanda at amanda.strauss@simmons.edu or Camille at camille.torres@simmons.edu.
SCoSAA Elevator Speech Contest - submissions due!
When: Monday, October 24, 2011
Have you ever told someone you are an archivist only to receive a blank look in return? Do you find it difficult to explain our profession? The first step to being an effective advocate for archives is to be able to succinctly explain what archivists do. This is a tall order, but not to fear!
As part of our American Archives Month celebrations, SCoSAA is hosting an Elevator Speech Contest. The guidelines are simple: In 28 words or less, respond to the question "What does an archivist do?" Submit your responses via the following link: http://tinyurl.com/3dcdjut.The deadline for submissions is midnight on Monday, October 24.
The SCoSAA community will vote for the best response from Tuesday, October 25 through Monday, October 31. The winner will receive a $15 gift card to Peets Coffee, the thanks of your colleagues, and a lifetime of smoother conversations with non-archivists. All of the responses will be posted on the SCoSAA website as a resource for archival advocacy.

Trivia will begin around 6pm, and we recommend teams of 4-6, with a max of 8 people. There was one brave team of two last year; and you can always match up with a group at the actual event.
Alumni, friends, family, and assorted others are all welcome to attend! We had a great time last year and this year promises to be fun as well! Please RSVP at http://librarytrivia.eventbrite.com so we can make sure that there is enough food. Because that is what ALASC and LISSA are all about.
Also: if you have some library or archives trivia that you think could stump some of your classmates, please send it to Stephanie at lissapres@simmons.edu! That trick that you can do where you match the Dewey number to the subject no longer impresses your friends as much as you want it to, but it might impress us!
