Digital Archivist Internship
Job Description
Position: Graduate Level Digital Archivist Internship in New Canaan, CT
Stipend: $3000 per semester
Type: At least 8 hours per week
Voices of September 11th (VOICES), a leading 501c3 nonprofit supporting those impacted by the terrorist attacks of 9/11, has a unique opportunity for a Digital Archivist Intern. VOICES began an initiative in 2006 called the 9/11 Living Memorial project which is digitizing the stories of 9/11 — beginning with the victims' family members and extending through first-hand accounts of rescue workers, survivors, corporations located in the WTC complex. The VOICES team has built over 800 digital victim profiles through a series of one-on-one meetings with family members and this content is on www.911livingmemorial.org. The archive also includes over 500 memorials that have been built to commemorate 9/11. Through a partnership with the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, the VOICES digital content will be a core component of the Memorial Museum when built at the World Trade Center site.
The VOICES Digital Archivist Interns work will be to digitize a significant amount of text, photo, audio and video content. This process will include the most effective means of capturing, cataloging, tagging and uploading this historic content into an easily searchable database and Website. Family members find it comforting knowing they are leaving a permanent profile of their lost loved one and documenting the many acts of philanthropy that have happened since that day.
Requirements:
- Current enrollment in Archival, Library, or Information Science graduate program. Preference will be given to student in digital library or archives specializations.
- Strong understanding of databases, digitization processes, and working knowledge of a variety of digital content formats and standards (e.g. xml, jpg, pdf)
- Ability to accomplish goals with limited resources and a vibrant team spirit
- Work with our Archivist.
Enthusiasm for commemorating 9/11 for current and future generations is highly valued.
