Independent Study Opportunity - Youth & Outreach Services

Date Posted: Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Institution: Springfield City Library
Location: Springfield, MA

An independent study opportunity is available in the Youth & Outreach Services Department of the Springfield City Library. The student will develop a proposal for a new Summer Reading Club for children and teens to be implemented in summer 2010. The goal will be a new format for the program that will attract and hold the interest of youth, particularly teens in this diverse, low-income city. After familiarizing him- or herself with services and programs that the Library has offered in the recent past, the student may use surveys, communication with teachers and other community partners, and research into programs used in other libraries across the country to lay the foundation for a proposal. In-library programs, service projects, new forms of reading incentives, and/or activities using the Web and Web 2.0 tools are all possible, but not required, components. The proposal should be one that Library staff can implement within a moderate budget provided by the Friends of the Springfield Library.

As well, the Library hopes to incorporate a visit from one or more young adult authors into the Summer Reading Club for teens. The intern will gather information on authors who might connect effectively with Springfield teens, and propose ways to use these author visits to boost interest in summer reading. A supplementary fund is available to support these visits.

Please send a letter of interest and summary of relevant experience to the Manager of Youth & Outreach Services, Jean Canosa Albano, at jcanosa@springfieldlibrary.org, or to 220 State Street, Springfield MA 01103.
