Volunteer Opportunity: Chinese Interpreter for Library Storytimes

The Thomas Crane Public Library is seeking a volunteer interpreter for a monthly Saturday morning storytime for children aged 2-5 and their caregivers. Working with a professional storyteller, the volunteer will interpret the stories, songs and rhymes in Chinese. After each storytime, the volunteer will act as interpreter for parents and children signing up for library cards, looking for library materials, or asking questions about other library services.

Storytimes are held on the third Saturday of every month at 10:00 a.m. and last about 45 minutes. The total time commitment would be approximately 1-1/2 hours, from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m.

Volunteers should have Chinese, (Mandarin and/or Cantonese,) and English language fluency, including the ability to read English and orally translate into Chinese. Other requirements include the ability to speak audibly and comfortably to groups and and the ability to work with and enjoy interacting with adults and small children. The commitment is from November through May.
