Library & Technology

GSLIS Technology Group

GSLIS has its own computer labs on the Boston and GSLIS West campuses. These labs are open only to GSLIS students, and contain dual boot iMacs (with Microsoft Vista & Mac OS X Leopard operating systems) with a variety of software supporting the GSLIS curriculum. The Labs are staffed by Technology Reference Assistants, current GSLIS students who can answer questions and help troubleshoot software and hardware in the lab. In addition, the Simmons Technology Office supports campus-wide technology, including the wireless network, e-mail support and maintenance of student network storage space. The Tech Lab is located in the Palace Road Building in room P-213.

GSLIS Usability Lab

GSLIS Usability Lab is an innovative, state-of-the practice usability testing facility that provides researchers, faculty, and students with a testing environment that support both user-centered curricula and usability engineering. In the Usability Lab, researchers, faculty, and students conduct user studies and usability testing/evaluation of specialized computer software, web interfaces, and library information systems. In addition to improving and enhancing GSLIS faculty and student research experience, the Usability Lab offers an unique setup with specialized software and devices that enable researchers from outside Simmons to perform usability evaluation of innovative technologies developed within their organizations.

GSLIS Media Lab

GSLIS Technology has recently opened up a Media Lab in P-203 of the Palace Road building. Allie Morgan, GSLIS student and Multimedia Specialist, will be available for customized tutorials, project planning, and troubleshooting on everything from software such as Audacity, Adobe Audition, and Camtasia to assist with video projects or projects involving a mixing board. She can also help with oral history projects and setting up podcasting programs. Located across from the Tech Lab in the Palace Road building, the Multimedia Lab is open for drop-in hours during the Fall 2011 semester on Mondays from 1pm-5pm and Tuesdays/Wednesdays from 10am-3pm and by appointment throughout the semester.

For questions or to schedule an appointment outside of the scheduled hours, Allie can be contacted at gsliscast@simmons.edu. More information on GSLIScast, the GSLIS podcast initiative, is available at http://gslis.simmons.edu/podcasts.
