Career Education Center
The Career Education Center (CEC) is definitely a place worth spending some time exploring while a student at GSLIS, as well as returning to as a professional. In fact, it is never too soon to start your own career folder at the center. Students may register with the Career Education Center to establish a recommendations file to house letters of reference, which can further support their candidacy for positions. Attention is given to the particular career needs through appointments with the Career Education Center. The school and the Library and Information Science Student Association (LISSA) support these efforts to help students with their career goals by offering additional or joint programs.
The CEC has many services and resources available to help you search for the right job and apply with confidence. Some of these services include:
- Career counseling, workshops and special events
- Campus recruiting
- Success Connection Leadership
- Professional Connections (This program is available to graduates only through the Alumnet website.)
The CEC website also provides career guides, self-assessment tests, resume and cover letter help, and career research at my.simmons.edu/services/cec/. The CEC also offers job and internship listings at my.simmons.edu/services/cec/joblistings/.
Career Resource Library
Located on the third floor of One Palace Road, the Miller/Knopf Career Resource Library is a specialized collection of career planning, job hunting, employer, and graduate school information. A librarian is available to assist students and alumni with their career research. On the CRL website, you will find online tools for investigating your interests, professions, labor market trends, salaries, and graduate schools. You can find information by field or by where you are in your professional life. Workshops and other career related events are posted on the CRL News page. Please call 617-521-2510 for more information.
Professional and Preprofessional Employment
GSLIS maintains a comprehensive list of professional and preprofessional positions available in the greater Boston area, New England, and out-of-state libraries; these listings can be found at http://gslis.simmons.edu/blogs/jobs/). A list of mentors is also maintained by the Assistant Dean for Student Services (mentors are GSLIS graduates who are currently working professionally in a library) and is available in a binder located outside the Matarazzo Student Lounge on the second floor of Palace Road.
