Encoder/Verification Specialist, Massachusetts Historical Society, Boston, MA

QUAL: Requirements
• Bachelor's degree
• MLS or significant progress toward the degree preferred
• Demonstrated experience with markup languages (XML or HTML) and/or schema and DTDs.
• Some experience with XSLT and CSS preferred; experience in creation of XSLTs a plus.
• Familiarity with cataloging, archival records, or database construction a plus.
• Ability to learn and follow specific guidelines and instructions.
• Keen eye for detail.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

DUTIES: The Massachusetts Historical Society seeks qualified candidates to fill a one-year part-time position on the Adams Papers Control File Digitization Project, a grant-funded project to convert item-level descriptions of more than 100,000 Adams documents into an online XML database. Preliminary conversion was completed in 2009; the Encoder/Verification Specialist will begin January 2010 and will report to the Project Manager on the production of XML-encoded files for online delivery. This is a humanities computing project that requires a combined technical and liberal arts background. This project is designed not only to create an online database but also to develop guidelines for similar archival catalog conversions; therefore individuals with new and creative approaches to offering enriched metadata online and resolving cross-platform digital content will be preferred.  Major Responsibilities:
• Learns and uses Project's encoding guidelines, custom-designed schema, and verification instructions.
• Inputs changes, edits tagging and content, and enriches XML-encoded files in an XML editor.
• Applies XSLT and other schemas for quality assurance as needed.
• Applies and verifies authority records to XML database records.
• Communicates with other team members to insure consistency in process and guidelines.
• Participates in project team meetings and offers input about workflow, encoding anomalies, database structure, and navigation issues.

SALARY: This is a one-year (beginning Jan. 2010) grant-funded position for 20 hours per week at $20.40 per hour.

Technology Specialist/Archivist, Needham Free Public Library, Needham, MA

QUAL: Master's Degree in Library and Information Science; knowledge of a wide variety of computer programs, applications, and equipment; three years of professional library experience.

DUTIES: The Needham Free Public Library is seeking a highly qualified person to fill the position of Technology Specialist/Archivist. Under the supervision of the Library Director, responsible for all aspects of information technology within the library, facilitating the use of technology by both library patrons and staff.
The Technology Specialist oversees all levels of automation, particularly the Minuteman Library Network, and all independent computer functions; evaluates current and future needs for library technology; enhances the delivery of library services by keeping informed of changing and emerging technologies; and supervises automation and technical training for staff and patrons.
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, coordinating electronic technology use in the library; planning for, purchasing, and implementing a variety of hardware and software to meet the needs of both the public and the staff; acquiring training and familiarity with computer hardware, operating systems, software applications, and the Internet; preparing training procedures for training the staff and the public; arranging for installation, maintenance, and repair of hardware; performing general troubleshooting of computer workstations, printers, software applications; researching and recommending computer and telecommunication applications to insure the improvement of services and operations; managing all system functions provided through the Minuteman Library Network; acting as liaison between the library and the Minuteman Library Network; serving on appropriate Minuteman committees; maintaining the library's web page.
Additionally, responsibilities include organizing and maintaining the library's Archives and Local History and Genealogy Collections, applying for appropriate grants, and writing appropriate publicity articles.

SALARY: $45,134-$58,969 per year (Grade NR-4) Full-Time, With Benefits
