Metadata Librarian, Yale University, New Haven, CT

QUAL:  Master's Degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and information sciences, or graduate degree in a related subject field. Appointment to the rank of Librarian II requires two years of relevant professional experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank. Appointment to Librarian III requires five years of professional library experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank. Familiarity with current and emerging metadata standards and schemas including MARCXML, Dublin Core, MODS, and METS. Sound knowledge of XML, XSLT, and XPath. Proficient computer skills and experience with heterogeneous operating systems including Windows, Mac, and UNIX/Linux. Knowledge of computer hardware and software application related to library services. Skills in programming and scripting languages, preferably Java and PHP. Working familiarity with OCLC WorldCat and one local library management system (preferably Voyager). Strong analytical, problem solving, and academic research skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to manage a variety of tasks and multiple priorities. Logical and enthusiastic approach to work; careful attention to detail; initiative and follow-through in equal measure. Ability to work well independently and with others across different departments and units. Ability to excel in rapidly changing academic environment.
Preferred: One to two years of experience working with metadata standards and production in an academic library; and professional experience developing library related software applications and system improvements. Experience in project management and cross-unit collaboration. Knowledge of cataloging standards and practices, including authority control, and subject analysis. Knowledge of MARC standards and their application. Knowledge of controlled vocabulary, and terminology development and implementation. Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages. Knowledge of current trends and best practices in metadata and digital library production and services. Sound SQL and database query skills.

Within the University Library, Technical Services departments pursue a course of continual change and innovation in building integrated, university-wide information access systems. These systems are designed to provide readers timely access to new materials in all formats as well as a high-quality bibliographic record of Yale's extraordinary library collections, which have developed over the last three centuries. Our collections continue to grow at more than 200,000 volumes per year, including an increasing number of materials in digital form.
General Purpose
Under the general direction of the Metadata Services and Catalog Management Team Leader, works closely with other librarians and support staff on the team and across the departments of the Library to provide a variety of metadata production and consultation services for a wide range of analog and digital projects within the Library and across the campus. The Metadata Librarian will also be responsible for developing metadata maintenance projects, as well as automation programs and tools that will enhance the productivity and improve work processes of both the team and the department of Catalog and Metadata Services.
Responsibilities
Participates in and contributes to metadata production and consulting services. Identifies and implements appropriate metadata standards for the digital projects that the team and department engage in; contributes to the development and maintenance of the library's metadata initiatives and operations. Creates metadata records for the functional requirements of a project; designs and applies metadata mapping profiles for conversion of metadata from one schema to another for production purposes; develops and implements workflows and procedures for specific collection projects. Provides consultation and guidance to colleagues in other departments or libraries and supports faculty members and/or students for their teaching, research, and learning endeavors. Participates in the planning and implementation of special projects and initiatives. Implements development plans and monitors the timely progress of the ongoing projects; and provides training and documentation for project related activities. Participates in the upcoming OCLC reclamation project to ensure the full representation of Yale Library's holdings on the WorldCat; and facilitates the development of the project in different phases.
Develops and implements metadata and cataloging tools and applications. Assesses and analyzes the automation needs of the team and department for both metadata and cataloging operations; explores, evaluates, and implements both open source and vendors' software applications and programs that support and improve the current metadata and/or cataloging functions; customizes existing cataloging applications and toolkits to enhance productivity and efficiency. Applies programming and scripting languages to support the technical requirements; meets the production needs and challenges for metadata creation, conversion, implementation, and maintenance; develops and/or customizes API applications and tools for automation of processing and new services; participates in the collaborative development of next-generation discovery tools and interfaces. Provides metadata training and supports metadata troubleshooting. Designs and provides technical training for staff in the department and across the library in the application of metadata standards and the Yale metadata best practices, and works closely with Training and Documentation Librarian in developing training documents and workshops.
Engages in continuous professional development. Takes advantage of professional training and learning opportunities inside and outside of Yale to expend and deepen the knowledge of metadata theory and practices, digital library development, and emerging information technologies; participates in departmental and library wide committees and collaborative programs; attends and/or make presentations at both regional and national professional conferences. May be required to assist in disaster recovery efforts. Head of Reference and Information Literacy Services, Assumption College, Worcester, MA

QUAL: Candidates must hold an MLS from an ALA-accredited library school and have at least five years of professional academic library experience, including reference service, teaching, and supervision. An additional advanced degree is preferred. Candidates must exhibit a strong commitment to customer service. The successful candidate will possess a demonstrated ability to collaborate with faculty, administrators, and other library staff, and to evaluate and implement new technologies. Some evening and occasional Sunday hours will be required. Applicants must be willing to contribute actively to the mission of the College as well as show respect for the Catholic and Assumptionist identity of Assumption College.

DUTIES: Assumption College seeks a dynamic and innovative librarian to provide leadership for its Reference and Information Literacy Services Department. The incumbent will manage and mentor a staff of 2.5 FTE librarians in providing reference services for a primary clientele that includes 2100 undergraduate and 700 graduate students, both on-campus and distance learners. S/he will also provide leadership and vision to guide the expansion of the information literacy program. Additional responsibilities include reference collection development, liaison work with one or more academic departments, and serving as a member of the Library Director's Administrative Team. Assumption College, a Catholic liberal arts and professional studies college, was founded in 1904 by its sponsoring religious community, the Augustinians of the Assumption. The Library is a member of the Academic and Research Collaborative of the Central Massachusetts Regional Library System. Chief Acquisitions Librarian and Head of Acquisitions Department, Yale University Library, New Haven, CT

QUAL: Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program of library and information science, and five years of professional library experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank. Demonstrated achievement supervising staff and administering acquisitions or serial work, preferably in an academic library setting. Appointment to the rank of Librarian IV requires eight years of professional library experience and demonstrated professional accomplishments appropriate to the rank.
High-level time management and project/planning management skills. Ability to be innovative in problem-solving, to complete tasks in the most effective manner using the available resources. Demonstrated success in working effectively within established guidelines, budgets, and procedures. A high level of numeracy and ability to deal effectively with complex budgets. Ability to assist managers to review and revise workflows to accommodate system improvements, new vendor services, and client requirements. Experience in collecting and analyzing production and performance data. Position General Purpose
The Chief Acquisitions Librarian and Head of the Acquisitions Department reports to the Director of Technical Services. Exercises leadership for the policies and procedures used in all units of the Library for ordering, receiving, and paying, and the physical processing of Library materials in a changing and technologically sophisticated environment. Collaborates daily with other Library acquisitions units, with staff throughout the Library, and with vendors and publishers to provide optimal access to the Yale University Library community.
In addition, the Chief Acquisitions Librarian heads the very busy central Acquisitions Department in the Sterling Memorial Library. The Librarian is responsible for fostering a team approach in the Department, comprised of approximately 35 staff members, organized into five service units: Order Support, Monograph Support, Fiscal Support, Acquisitions Operations Management, Serials Support and Preparations. The Acquisitions Department annually places over 20,000 orders for both serials and monographs, receives over 90,000 serial and monographic titles, about 60% of which are from foreign sources, provides full-level copy cataloging for nearly 21,000 titles at the point of receipt, is responsible for the receipt of nearly 30,000 periodical issues, the binding of 11,000 completed periodical volumes, and processes payments of between $9-10 million (USD). The department also processes exchange items and gifts, including the preparation of gift acknowledgements for the University Librarian's signature. The Department makes widespread use of approval and prepayment plans, vendors' online ordering systems, available technology for invoicing and renewals, batch loading of MARC records, and also has a gifts and exchange program.
The Chief Acquisitions Librarian serves on the Library's Technical Services Management Group, the Library Management Council, and various other key governing groups within the Library. The Chief Acquisitions Librarian also chairs the Acquisitions Services Group. Yale University Library is committed to technological innovation, ongoing process improvement, and staff development. The Chief Acquisitions Librarian is key in achieving transformation that improves services, achieves efficiencies, and supports the fiscal integrity of the Library. Responsibilities
Exercises leadership for the policies and procedures used in all units of the library for ordering, receiving, and paying, and processing for Library materials in a changing and technologically sophisticated environment. Heads the central Acquisitions Department in the Sterling Memorial Library. Responsible for fostering a team approach and achieving operational goals in the Department, comprised of 35 staff members organized into five (5) service units: Acquisitions Operations Management, Order Support, Monograph Support, Preparation/Serials Support, and Fiscal Support. Supports the electronic interfaces with vendors for acquisitions functions in the Sterling Memorial Library and for all School and Departmental libraries. Takes a leadership role in the identification and implementation of technology to support greater efficiencies in the acquisition function throughout the Library system.
Responsible for vendor relations and payments to vendors, including securing the annual deposit account estimates from US, UK, and Western European vendors and coordination of deposit payments with Research Services and Collections selectors and the Library Business Office, including requesting invoices from vendors. Makes recommendations to the Associate University Librarian (AUL) for Collections and International Programs and to Selectors regarding deposit payments to vendors based on rollover amounts at the end of the fiscal year. Participates in vendor selection and evaluation in conjunction with the AUL for Collection and International Programs and Selectors. Oversees the payment of the annual renewal of periodical subscriptions for the Sterling Memorial Library. Provides leadership, support, and coordination for the annual fiscal year rollover, including coordination with the Chief Administrative Officer, the Associate University Librarian for Collections and International Programs, and the Director of Technical Services. Creates and ensures that the "End-Of-Year" schedule is implemented, in all acquisitions units, system-wide. Coordinates system testing and the implementation of updates to the Library's on-line management system. Identifies training needs for all acquisitions units in the Library's on-line management system and in vendor systems.
Heads the Acquisitions Services Group (ASG) and is a member of the Collection Development Council (CDC) and the Technical Services Management Group (TSMG). Serves on various other key governing groups within the Library. Performs other tasks and duties, as directed, related to position responsibilities, and/or to the goals, objectives, and overall mission of the Library's technical services program. May be required to assist with disaster recovery efforts. May be assigned to work at West Campus location in West Haven, CT.
