DUTIES: The Brown University Library invites applications for a Rhode Island Encoded Archival Description Consortium Project Manager, a 2-year, National Endowment for the Humanities grant-funded position. The Project Manager will assist in the development and implementation of an EAD finding aid project involving ten Rhode Island repositories. This position will coordinate the creation and submission of over 300 archival finding aids to the union database and provide additional EAD training and support (including on-site visits as needed) to participating institutions. The Project Manager will assist in the formulation, dissemination, implementation, administration, and revision of related policies and procedures as required. The Project Manager will publicize the activities and goals of the project, including presentations at national and regional professional meetings, press releases via professional listservs and websites, creation of promotional materials, and reports.

Brown University Library is the lead institution on the Rhode Island EAD project. The Project Manager reports to the Project Director for the grant. The position will be based at Brown University, but will require frequent travel around the state of Rhode Island to participating repositories for site visits and project meetings.

DUTIES: The Museum is seeking a Collections Manager who will report to the Director of Collections and Exhibitions. The Collections Manager will be responsible for the effective management of the Museum's collections that include manuscripts, books, photographs, prints, paintings, furniture, sculpture, and other artifacts, including some archaeological materials. The Collections Manager will help to plan and implement a new project to digitize the collections.

Responsibilities include:
  • Assure optimum care and monitoring of the collections
  • Catalog collections in database
  • Manage all requests for loans and reproduction agreements, including completing forms, packing, shipping, and insurance arrangements
  • Respond to research requests from inside and outside the Museum

  • Provides training in collections maintenance and reformatting preparation procedures and techniques.
  • Responsible for design, construction, and training staff in the construction of protective enclosures for general library materials. Participates in project management, long-range program planning, disaster recovery, preservation training, and outreach.
  • Assists in the management of conservation services.
  • Participates in surveys and development of web-based publications.
  • Assists in providing collections conservation services for Harvard College libraries outside of Widener Library.
  • Contributes to maintenance of vendor files, Conservation Services Library.

The work associated with this position is performed in a conservation laboratory. The incumbent sometimes works with solvents, moldy materials, and items that could potentially pose other biological hazards. The incumbent uses a range of bookbinding
equipment, including heavy presses, manual and power cutters, dry mount press, fume hood, hot stamping press, deionization system for water purification, double-fan adhesive binding press, and freeze dryer. This equipment is highly specialized and many pieces require safety precautions because of high temperature or sharp blades.

The position is within the Conservation Services division, which with the Imaging Services division makes up the Preservation department of the Harvard College Library. Conservation Services, an HCL division based in Widener, consists of two groups: the Collections Conservation Lab and the Binding and Shelf Preparation group. Each provides a full range of services to HCL libraries, as well as training and consulting services to other libraries at Harvard. The HCL Collections Conservation Lab is a state-of-the-art facility occupying 3,400 square feet in Widener Library. The lab handles all phases of conservation treatment for Widener Library collections.
