Reporting to the Five Colleges Librarians Council through the Director of Libraries, UMass Amherst, this position leads the management and ongoing utilization of the Five Colleges Libraries Aleph integrated library system. DUTIES: The Director of the Science Librarian provides vision, managerial leadership and knowledge of the information and resource needs of students, faculty and researchers in the sciences. This position leads an information services team providing services in a distributed, innovative digital environment using a wide range of resources, including local and remote online databases, link resolvers and superb historical paper-based collections.

This position provides leadership and direction for six Yale science libraries including reference and instruction/education services, cataloging, collection development and management, online literature searching, faculty liaison work, and staff supervision. Supervises 5 FTE librarians, 2 Managers, 14.5 support staff, and student workers.

Provides leadership and expertise. Defines and articulates library goals and objectives. Facilitates communication and coordination among science libraries members and other Yale libraries. Develops and maintains channels of communication with science faculty, researchers and students.

Fosters a creative, team-oriented work environment.  Promotes the use of current and emerging technologies. Works independently with varied user groups in a complex organization, and functions collaboratively in a team environment.  Provides leadership on projects, reference desk and online reference assistance, in-depth research assistance, and library-based critical thinking instruction.  Prepares budget requests and justifications.  Analyzes, evaluates, and sets priorities for the efficient use of staff and funds.

Serves as a member of the Library Management Council in the setting of library-wide policies and development of long-range planning. Develops staff and recruits talented professionals and support staff to the Yale Library system.  Remains current with scientific research, methodology, scholarship, and professional activity.

This position reports to the AUL for School and Department Libraries, a rotating position among the directors of these libraries.
