QUAL: Master's degree from ALA-accredited program or equivalent experience; experience with acquisitions and/or cataloging operations; familiarity with general bibliographic control principles, including controlled vocabularies and authority control; familiarity with reference service; familiarity with SQL and Microsoft Access Databases. Appointment at the Librarian II level requires a minimum of two years of professional experience and demonstrated professional accomplishment. DUTIES: Reporting to the Director of Sciences Libraries and Information Services, this position serves as the Head of Technical Services for the distributed Science Libraries, works in the Science Libraries as a member of a team providing information services in a distributed, innovative, and technically sophisticated environment utilizing the Yale University Online Catalog (Orbis), various local and remote information databases (e.g. Ovid, and OCLC), and a superb historical paper-based collection.

Manages and coordinates the distributed science libraries' technical services operations (acquisitions, cataloging, serial maintenance, binding, preservation), including direct supervision and training of 3 FTE library assistants and student assistants.  Manages the flow of materials between libraries; works closely with the Chief Acquisitions Librarian and the Chief Catalog Librarian and other designated staff in the development and implementation of library-wide standards and procedures to support technical services for the science libraries.   Participates in the development of library-wide policies, procedures, and best practices relating to acquisitions, cataloging and metadata creation that support the bibliographic control and access to print and digital materials.  Produces reports related to technical services for quality control, collection development/analysis, etc., from the Library's integrated library system.  Participates in providing a program of services including user education, online searching, and liaison work to Departments.  Provides coverage for reference/education services via online tools and the Reference Desk.  Serves on appropriate library committees and pursues professional development activities, and is expected to be professionally active at Yale and nationally.  May be required to participate in disaster recovery efforts.  May be assigned to work on the West Campus in West Haven, Connecticut.

DUTIES: Manuscripts and Archives seeks an early career professional to join a dynamic public services unit in an active special collections and university archives setting. Reporting to the Head of Public Services, the archivist will also work closely with the Department Director and the Senior Archivist for Digital Information Services.

Responsibilities
Explores and proposes new technologies, including Web 2.0, to meet research and reference needs of patrons and staff.  Serves as a member of, and public services liaison to, the departmental systems team. Under the direction of the Senior Archivist for Digital Information Services, the team employs digital technologies to transform departmental processes and operations and ensures the functioning of the department's technology infrastructure.  Serves as the web manager for the department's public web portal and is responsible for maintaining and updating the department's internal policies and procedures web site.  Provides high-level, in-depth reference and research assistance and instruction.  Using departmental and library digital infrastructure, manages preservation and access copies resulting from digital duplication.  Serves as point person for online exhibit program and serves on departmental exhibits committee.  With the director, manages administrative duties related to the budget, facilities and space management, and security.  Hires and supervises the Senior Administrative Assistant; provides guidance, training, skill development, and performance evaluation.  Participates in the formulation of department policy and procedures.  Participates in library-wide planning and committee work as appropriate.  Engages actively with professional organizations and literature; keeps abreast of archival trends and developments.  May be required to assist with disaster recovery efforts.  May be assigned to work on West Campus.

11/21/08 Lexington, MA Assistant Archivist, MIT Lincoln Laboratory Knowledge Services.

QUAL: MIT Lincoln Laboratory (MIT/LL) has pioneered in advanced electronics since its origin in 1951 as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Lincoln Laboratory research focuses on advanced technology to problems of national security. Materials relate to the Laboratory's mission areas: space control, air and missile defense technology, communication and information technology, IRS systems and technology, advanced electronics technology, homeland protection, and air traffic control. As part of the Knowledge Management and Archives Team the successful candidate will be responsible for the more traditional aspects of the Archives as well as working with colleagues in Knowledge Services Sector and the Information Services Department to integrate the Laboratory's born-digital collection into the existing collection. This position requires someone with experience in a wide variety of media including born-digital objects. As such, we are looking for an energetic, creative, and experienced Assistant Archivist to join our team to maintain and market the more traditional archival program and help direct both the strategic and project planning for our digital resources.

Required Qualifications:

  • MLS from an ALA-accredited Masters in Library Science program with concentration on Archival practices
  • Three years of professional archival experience in an established archive
  • Demonstrated experience in using computer applications for the management of archival holdings and the creation of digital documents for outreach via virtual
