Paying for Graduate School

Scholarships and Grants*

Merit-based Scholarships

Applicants who have submitted a completed application by the priority deadline (see deadlines) are automatically considered for a merit-based scholarship.  These scholarships are awarded by the Admission Committee based on the "merit" or strength of an application in comparison to all other completed and eligible applications for that same semester.  Students are required to take at least two courses and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.5 during the semester(s) they are awarded (not including summer).  Merit awards are intended to be a recruitiment tool and are only awarded to new students. Award notification is typically sent mid-March for the summer and fall semesters, and early October for the spring semester.  International students are eligible for merit scholarships.

Need-based Grants

Incoming and returning students may also be eligible for need-based grants.  These awards are made by Student Financial Services on behalf of Admission.  Awards are based on students' financial need as determined by their completed FAFSA.  Need-based grants are awarded for the fall, spring and summer semesters. Grant funding is limited, so please make sure to meet priority application deadlines. International students are not eligible for need-based grants.

Federal and Private Loans*

US citizens and permanent residents are eligible for federal and private loans. We encourage applicants to apply for financial aid at the same time they apply for admission to graduate school.

Graduate students must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), a Simmons Supplemental Information Form, and any additional supporting documents that may be required. Deadlines for financial aid application are March 1 for summer and fall terms, and October 1 for spring. Graduate students must maintain at least half-time enrollment status (five credits or more per semester) to qualify for need-based aid.

Please note: FAFSA print applications typically take four to six weeks to process. Filing your FAFSA online expedites the processing time. You can file FAFSA online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The federal school code for Simmons is 002208.

Please see Student Financial Services for more information about applying for aid as well as forms.

*Please note that all students are eligible for merit awards, but only U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible for need-based grants, federal loans and most private loans. Students who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents may qualify for some private loans (contact Student Financial Services for more information).
