techonology at gslis

new gslis building GSLIS is located at One Palace Road, a naturally lighted, technologically advanced environment for learning, teaching, research, and administration. The many technology resources include electronic classrooms, wireless networking, multimedia services, and free technology training for students, faculty, and staff. GSLIS shares four floors of office and classroom space with the School of Social Work, and the Simmons centers for information technology, career resources, and academic support, and works closely with these centers.

gslis tech labThe GSLIS Tech Lab

The Technology Lab is the center of GSLIS technology services for students, faculty and staff. The Lab has over 40 computers, both Mac and PC, with scanners, printers, and other input/output equipment. Students have all of the technology, software applications, server-based services, and equipment required for their course work. The Tech Lab staff is committed to supporting the student body with the highest level of technology service to further learning and meeting the demands of the curriculum. The Lab is fully staffed for 92 hours of operation each week by Technology Reference Assistants (TRAs) and Tech Lab staff. The TRAs and staff are available for consultation, network assistance, and course support, helping with all manner of requests ranging from printing problems to questions about the Technology Orientation Requirement to support for lengthy, course-related projects.

Tech Lab Resources

There are 35 PCs and 5 iMacs in the main lab and 6 PCs in the adjacent Cataloging Lab, 46 machines in total. All machines have Microsoft Office 2003, two web browsers (Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox), Sophos AntiVirus, CD burners, DVD players, and GSLIS specific software including current web authoring and photo editing software packages. There are 4 flat bed scanners, 2 large format scanners, and 1 slide scanner. Additionally, the Tech Lab maintains a library of documentation for the software applications running on the lab's computers and the online services that are available to students. All students have an account on the College's UNIX server. This account allows every student access to e-mail and to mount a web home page. Students have an account on the College WIN2003 server for a secure network space and shared projects. Access to email accounts and student support for WebCT Vista, GSLIS' web-based courseware, are also provided by the TRAs and staff of the Tech Lab.
