Ching-chih Chen

Ching-chih ChenProfessor

Professor Chen is an author and editor of 35 books and more than 200 articles in the areas of information technology and management, recently specifically related to global digital libraries. She has received numerous major awards, including the Outstanding Information Science Teacher Award of the American Society for Information Science and Technology; the Library Information Technology Association's LITA/Gaylord Award for Achievement in Library and Information Technology, the LITA/HiTech Literature Award, and the LITA/OCLC Kilgour Award, the Humphrey/OCLC Award for outstanding contribution to international library work, as well as the first ALISE Pratt-Severn National Faculty Award in Library and Information Studies. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences. She served as a member of both President Clinton's and President Bush's Presidential Information Technology Advisory Committee (PITAC) from 1998-2002, and was actively involved in several PITAC subcommittees, including Digital Library, Digital Divide, Future of Learning, Individual Security, and International Issues.

Professor Chen has devoted her major efforts in recent years to digital library research and development. Her Global Memory Net, a multi-year International Digital Library Project, supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF/IDLP), was publicly launched in July 2006. Its collaborators include UNESCO's Memory of the World, the Asian Division of Library of Congress, and many other major institutions around the world. Currently she is leading another major 36-month NSF/IDLP project related to digital imaging, and is a co-PI of the major China-U.S. Million Book Digital Library Project supported by NSF and the Chinese Ministry of Education. She was a member of the advisory board of the DELOS (European Network of Excellence in Digital Libraries). A consultant to the China Digital Library Program of the National Library of China, she is on Steering Committee and/or Program Committees of many international digital library conferences, including the Asian International Conference on Digital Libraries, European Conference on Digital Libraries, ACM/IEEE Joint Conference on Digital Libraries, International Conference on Digital Libraries, New Delhi, and Russian Conference on Digital Libraries.

Speeches and Conference Presentations

On August 27-28, 2007, Prof. Chen was invited speaker at the 2-day Leadership Program on IT and Economic Development in Mbabani, organized by the American Embassy in Swaziland.

On August 20, 2007, Prof. Chen delivered three major speeches at the Divisional Meetings of three IFLA Divisions at the IFLA (International Federation of Library Institutions) 73th Annual Meeting in Durban, South Africa. The Three Divisions are Art Libraries Division, Multimedia and Resource Sharing Division, and Government Libraries Division.

In July she was the key invited speaker at the 2007 NDAP Workshop on Collection Internationalization and International Collaboration Program, Academia Sinica, Taipei, July 23, 2007.

Professor Ching-chih Chen was an invited speaker at the University San Luis Potosi (SLP) in Mexico on June 25 and at the SLP Humanities Council on June 29, 2007. She also visited two World Heritage Sites—Sierra Gorda and Quaratero, under the sponsorship of the Ministry of Culture of Guaratero. This is related to her World Heritage Memory Net project in partnership with UNESCO World Heritage Center (see http://whc.unesco.org/en/news/326).

"West by East - East by West: Cultural and Technological Exchange in the Case of Global Memory Net," and "Using Tomorrow's Retrieval Technology to Explore the Heritage: Bonding Past and Future in the Case of Global Memory Net," were two papers presented at the IFLA 2006 meeting in Seoul, Korea, August 21, 2006.

"Using Web as a Platform in Developing Seamlessly Integrated World Digital Library for Global Use: The Challenges of Global Memory Net," was an invited speech given at the National Institute of Informatics in Tokyo, Japan, July 14, 2006.

"Challenges for Developing a World Digital Library and Gateway: The Case of Global Memory Net," was an invited speech delivered at the LIDA 2006 (Libraries in the Digital Age), Dubrovnik, Croatia, May 31, 2006.

"Thai's Invaluable Memory Celebrated via Global Memory Net," was a keynote speech presented at the 8th International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries (ICAD 2005), Bangkok, Thailand, December 13, 2005 in celebration of the 50th Birthday of H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, the Patron of the Thai Library Association.
