Happy Valentine's Day

Look at these Dalek Valentine's cookies someone made

My Valentine's Day present this year is a cold. :(

I've been inching along with my thesis. I'm going to get a goodly chunk written this week, and stay on track with writing through the end of the semester. The first complete draft is due March 25th, which seems uncomfortably close.

My friend and colleague Kate and I have submitted the final, final version of the article that was accepted for publication in Fat Studies. We first submitted it back at the end of August, it made it to a second round of consideration, and then went through peer review and was accepted for publication. Kate and I completed revisions on the piece, and it looks good. We're certainly looking forward to seeing it in print.

This is the first time either of us has been published in an academic journal, and it is quite normal for the process to take several months or longer.

My mother visited for the day this past Sunday, and despite the effects of the blizzard (which didn't seem like much of a big deal to me, since I grew up in Buffalo, NY) we walked down to the Prudential Center and enjoyed a day shopping downtown. It's only about a 20 minute walk to the Pru from the Fenway. It's convenient by T as well, of course--but the trains weren't running on Sunday!

Visits from mothers tend to involve presents, and I received plenty of Valentine's chocolate. I've already eaten some, but I'll be sharing the rest tomorrow, at a Post-Valentine's dinner with a few friends from both within and outside of Simmons.

I hope you have a pleasant Valentine's and Post-Valentine's.
