Inching Along

Dalek of the Day

My presentation for the GCWS class the other week went quite well, I think. My classmate and I both have some background in fat studies and we were both really invested in the material, and I think that enthusiasm showed. We actually ended up with too much material pertaining to the portrayal of fat women in popular American film and we had to cut some of our discussion points.

We had anticipated that someone in the audience would try to derail our discussion by bringing up the "obesity epidemic" and the relationship between fatness and health outcomes. We did a good job keeping ourselves on track, I think, while still engaging with the point enough to remark that fat scholars and activists have produced a great deal of work on fat and health, and that mainstream discourses about "obesity" and health conditions associated with it are certainly not ignored our glossed over within the fat acceptance movement.

In the past couple of weeks I have become a bit backed up on schoolwork. I'm creeping along trying to finish reading/discussion responses, final paper proposals, and other relatively short assignments, while also trying to forge ahead with the plans for my thesis and trying to find steady employment by summer. Fortunately my professors have been very understanding.
