The Simmons English program provides a strong foundation in English, American, and comparative literary theory and analysis. The program varies according to individual interests, with courses on 17th-century poetry, children's literature, film and drama, the American novel, race and gender in women's poetry, narrative theory, and more. For students who are writers, or wish to become writing teachers, Simmons offers courses in creative and nonfiction writing, as well as a seminar in the theory and practice of teaching writing at the undergraduate and secondary school levels.
At Simmons, students enjoy a collegial relationship with faculty who are award-winning poets and playwrights, authors, reviewers, and nationally known scholars. Faculty areas of interest span historical periods, genres, and cultures, including the Bible, poetry from the Romantic era, Native American studies, Victorian literature, the Harlem Renaissance, Nicaragua and the Sandinista revolution, and children's literature.
