4 sem. hrs. Readings will include autobiographical writings by black people during slavery alongside poetry and significant essays by Emerson, DuBois, and Baldwin. Attention will be given to works of visual art by Augusta Savage and others as well as episodes from documentaries such as Jazz and from The Wire in what amounts to a multidisciplinary approach to American literature that will prepare students to consider the development of American literature and culture from a diverse perspective.
