Master's in Communications Management Program hosts Alumnae/i and Student Health and Wellness Event

Just in time for the holidays MCM students and alumnae/i learned how to incorporate stress reduction and relaxation techniques into their workday. On November 13, 2007, program graduate Olivia Miller visited Simmons to talk to the group about her passion, yoga, and easing some of that tension that seems to peak this time of year. Miller, who graduated from the program in 1984, teaches yoga through her home-based business in Cape Cod. She spoke to the MCM group about healthy habits to make time spent at work more productive by reducing stress and increasing energy. The group learned a series of easy yoga stretches they could do standing in their office or in their chairs at work to feel more relaxed throughout the day.

Following Miller's session, Sunada Takagi, a Cambridge, Massachusetts resident and member of the Western Order of Buddhists, discussed the importance of mindfulness with the group. Takagi, who worked in the corporate world for nearly twenty years, now teaches mediation online at wildmind.org. She discussed stress management through deep breathing and concentration. Takagi then guided the students, alumnae/i and staff through a ten-minute mindfulness meditation to relax the body and clear the mind.

Roughly twenty students and ten graduates of the MCM Program attended the Health and Wellness event, which concluded with a healthy, Mediterranean-style dinner.

Students from MCM fall classes in Consumer Communications and the Applied Learning Project attended the event with Instructor Richard Cravatts, who joined MCM this fall. Cravatts also teaches at Boston University and Babson College. MCM Program Director Joan Abrams who also teaches the Applied Learning Project course for MCM hosted the event. Abrams took the opportunity to introduce new students and alumnae/i to each other. During dessert new students were invited to talk about their experience with MCM. Later alumnae Barbara Vilandry '86, Ellen Lennon '98, and Olivia Miller '84 shared some favorite memories about their time in MCM, and discussed their experiences since finishing the program.
