The Master of Arts in English program provides a strong foundation in English, American, and comparative literary theory and analysis. This versatile program includes a broad offering of courses, personalized plans of study, and an opportunity to take courses in writing or writing instruction. Students may design a program of study that combines the traditional and the cutting-edge, with courses ranging from Shakespeare, Chaucer, and Dickens to postcolonial fiction, the postmodern novel, and feminist theory.
The Simmons English program attracts women and men who wish to teach, as well as those who plan to pursue a Ph.D. program or a profession that requires a strong foundation in writing or in the critical analysis of literature. Students enjoy a collegial relationship with faculty who are award-winning poets and playwrights, authors, reviewers, and nationally known scholars. Faculty areas of interest span historical periods, genres, and cultures, including the Bible, poetry from the Romantic era, Native American studies, Victorian literature, the Harlem Renaissance, Nicaragua and the Sandinista revolution, and children’s literature.
The 32-credit English program leads to a Master of Arts degree. A Writing Option is available in the M.A. program. Simmons also offers a dual-degree in English and Education for students who wish to become certified as an elementary, middle, or high school teacher.
