A Teaching Journey
The Simmons in Madrid Graduate Education Program offers students the
chance to earn a graduate degree in education while immersing
themselves in the vibrant culture of Spain. Graduate courses in
Boston, a 10-month internship teaching English in a Madrid charter
elementary school, and the opportunity for travel abroad make for a
singularly rewarding experience. Students will grow both personally and
professionally, enrich the lives of young learners, and earn up to
$17,000 in scholarship funds.
Graduate Program Highlights
- Individualized Master of Science in Education or Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study degrees with focus on Education, Spanish, or English Language Learners

Internship Program Highlights
- Scholarships and roundtrip airfare provided by UCETAM (Unión de Cooperativas de Enseñanza de Trabajo Asociado de Madrid)
- Supervised 10-month English teaching internship in a Spanish charter elementary school
- Onsite support in Madrid from a Simmons College faculty member
- Four-day orientation program in Madrid
- Regular education seminars in Madrid
- Support in identifying housing
- English as a Second Language courses including instruction on language acquisition and cultural competency in Boston and Madrid
Graduate Program Eligibility Requirements
- Demonstration of academic coursework or experience in early childhood and/or elementary education
- Intermediate proficiency in Spanish
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited U.S. institution or equivalent with a 3.0 cumulative grade
point average - Commitment to independence, flexibility, patience, maturity, and sensitivity to cultural differences
- Satisfaction of all criteria for internship placement
Internship Program Requirements and Responsibilities
- Work in an early childhood or elementary classroom at least 17 hours per week
- Collaborate with the teacher of record planning English language curriculum development and informal conversations in English for three hours per week
- Participate in professional development activities as required by school
- Participate in bi-monthly Simmons-sponsored education seminars in Madrid
