A leader in special education training since 1975, Simmons is a passionate advocate for including learners with special needs in general education classrooms and in community and work environments. In recent years, the significant trend toward educating learners with special needs in integrated settings has created a demand for highly qualified special education professionals who have a strong focus on content and knowledge. Consequently, Simmons graduates are in great demand. Our programs in the department of Special Education program provide a strong, practical foundation in general education content, special education theory and methodologies, and teaching experience. This can include a one-year practicum for students who are pursuing Massachusetts state licensure, or a one-year mentoring experience for students who are pursuing BCBA™ certification.
Simmons is one of the first universities to offer graduate programs in all of the following critical areas of special education: moderate and severe disabilities, assistive special education technology, behavioral education, language and literacy, and administration. These programs are designed to help meet a nationwide growing need for special education professionals who are trained in specific areas of expertise.
Students may pursue a Master of Science in Education (M.S.Ed.) or a Specialist in Education (Ed.S.) degree—an advanced degree that provides students who currently hold a master’s degree with an area of educational specialization. Each program of study is individually designed in consultation with the program coordinator and can be completed on a full-time or a part-time basis.”
The Department of Special Education offers a graduate degree with tuition support for teachers and specialists employed by the Boston or Cambridge public schools who are involved in issues that impact the field of special education.
The purpose of the initiative is to provide exemplary training to individuals working with learners with disabilities while granting significant tuition assistance. It demonstrates Simmons’s investment in urban education and pledges the College’s continued endorsement of the ideals of leadership and diversity.
