» Professional Licensure

About the Program

Under current Massachusetts Department of Education regulations, after five years of teaching with an initial license, teachers must meet the requirements for professional licensure. For teachers who do not hold a master's degree, these requirements include a master's in a content area or an approved master's. For those teachers who do hold a master's degree, they can take 12 credits of graduate level coursework, nine of which must be in the appropriate subject area.

For all education programs, Simmons has been successful in meeting a wide range of educational goals by providing each student with the advising necessary to develop a successful, individualized program of study. This personalized support is further enhanced by the small classes and the close mentoring relationships that students develop with faculty in the program.

Degree Options

Simmons offers two options that lead to eligibility for professional licensure. The 32 credit master's degree program, for those who do not have a previous master's degree, consists of four approved courses in an appropriate content area and four approved courses in advanced pedagogy. The 12 credit certificate program consists of three approved courses in an appropriate content area and is designed for teachers with master's degrees.
