» MAT: Middle School Teacher (Grades 5-9) and High School Teacher (Grades 9-12)

Master of Arts in Teaching and Initial Licensure – 36-credit program

The 36-credit program leads to the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and initial licensure in Massachusetts. The program can be completed in twelve months of full-time study beginning in the summer or fall. Individuals may design part-time sequences in consultation with a member of the department that begin in the summer, fall, or spring semesters.

Program Requirements
  • GEDUC 460: Strategies for the Inclusive Classroom 4 cr.
  • GEDUC 445: Educational Psychology 4 cr.
  • GEDUC 420: Reading and Writing Across the Curriculum 4 cr.
  • GEDUC 455: Issues in Teaching Middle and High School 4 cr.
  • GEDUC 457: Cultural Foundations of Education 4 cr.
  • GEDUC ___: Methods of Teaching (Subject area) 4 cr.
  • GEDUC ___: Elective 4 cr.
  • GEDUC 402: Seminar: Middle/High School (Spring) 4 cr.
  • GEDUC 481/2: Practicum (Middle/High School) (Spring) 4 cr.

The practicum is a full-time, 14-week teaching experience during the spring semester. Please note that acceptance into the MAT program does not guarantee automatic acceptance into the practicum. Students must be recommended by the department before moving into the practical portion of the program.


Master of Arts in Teaching and Initial Licensure – 40-credit program

The 40-credit program leads to the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and initial licensure in Massachusetts. Individuals may complete requirements for the degree and licensure in a 14-month program of full-time study beginning in the first summer semester, or a 16-month program of full-time study beginning in the second summer and fall semesters. Individuals may design part-time sequences in consultation with a member of the department.

  • GEDUC ___: Methods of Teaching (Subject area) 4 cr.
  • GEDUC ___: Elective 4 cr.
  • GEDUC 400: Pre-Practicum Seminar (Middle/High) (Fall) 4 cr.
  • GEDUC 488: Pre-Practicum (Middle/High) (Fall) 4 cr.
  • GEDUC 402: Seminar: Middle/High School (Spring) 4 cr.
  • GEDUC 481/2: Practicum (Middle/High School) (Spring) 4 cr.

The pre-practicum and practicum provide our students with a year-long teaching experience. The MAT program has developed relationships with a variety of communities in Massachusetts in order to provide our students with the best practicum experiences possible.

Please note that acceptance into the MAT program does not guarantee automatic acceptance into the pre-practicum/practicum. Students must be recommended by the department before moving into the practical portion of the program.
