Working with the community is essential to successful public librarianship. Harnessing the power of the people constructively while avoiding backlash and naysayers is always a challenge. Civic engagement encompasses a range of connections including teen advisory groups, board committees, neighborhood councils and other groups. This presentation will offer an overview of this dimension of library service based on observations and experiences, both positive and not so positive.
