SIMMONS SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT APPOINTS EXPERT ON STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT, ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND CHINESE BUSINESS PRACTICES

Teresa Nelson to lead nationally recognized entrepreneurship program
Simmons School of Management has appointed Teresa Nelson, an expert on strategic management, entrepreneurship and Chinese business practices, as the Elizabeth J. McCandless Chair in Entrepreneurship.

Nelson will run the school’s Entrepreneurship Initiative, which includes the nationally recognized Certificate Program in Entrepreneurship that was recently ranked one of the top 25 graduate entrepreneurship programs in the country, and the best in New England, by Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review. The program also was selected one of the 10 most innovative in the nation earlier this year by Fortune Small Business magazine.

The Simmons entrepreneurship program also includes an Entrepreneur-in-Residence, undergraduate programming, and the Silverman Business Plan Competition, which carries a $10,000 prize. The entrepreneurship programs focus on hands-on learning and allow students to pursue opportunities in new venture creation, social entrepreneurship, and corporate entrepreneurship. Nelson will teach and conduct research in addition to running the entrepreneurship program. Simmons offers the only MBA program in the nation designed specifically for women.

Nelson comes to Simmons from Suffolk University’s Sawyer Business School, where she was a professor of business and the director of the school’s Office of Technology Management. Her extensive experience in international business includes consulting on Chinese business practices and leading trips to China for students and business executives. She also has taught in France, the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Senegal, and has expertise in the structure and operation of foreign stock markets.

Nelson received her bachelor’s degree in community service planning from the University of Massachusetts in Boston, and her MBA from Western Michigan University. She received her Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Nelson, who lives in Marblehead, Mass., also worked for 16 years in Massachusetts as a fundraising director and chief of staff for state politicians.
