October 3rd: Alumnae Present in the Silverman Business Plan Competition Finals

Our Entrepreneurship Program Ranked in Top 25 Nationally by Entrepreneurship Magazine

Hello, all:

Extraordinarily good news this month as we celebrate being recognized by Entrepreneur Magazine as a top 25 graduate program in the U.S. And part of the reason we are so recognized is the great co-curricular program that has been built for new venture development at the SOM, including the Silverman Business Plan Competition.

Please join our community on October 3, 2008 (4:00 pm -6:00 pm, with reception to follow) for the 3rd annual Silverman Business Plan Competition (to be held in the Mockler Caseroom Building). This year’s finalists are SOM alumnae:

Heatherjean MacNeil, Founder of Proxy – Fashion forward, fair trade clothing for Gen Y (MBA and Certificate in Entrepreneurship ’08)

Vangile Makwakwa, Founder of Speak2BFree – a global, online slam poetry site (MBA and Certificate in Entrepreneurship ’08)

Jennifer Morris, Founder of LocalWatt – Plug-in systems for electric cars (MBA ’07 and Certificate in Entrepreneurship ’08)

RSVP here soon: http://www.simmons.edu/som/centers/entrepreneurship/silverman.shtml

I also want to congratulate and recognize the other 4 semi-finalists – we look forward to working with Janine, Brenda, Caroline and Ande as they move their businesses forward.

Janine Dailey '09/Street Peace/urban gear with a message
Caroline Perkins '83 /Speak Food Service/online communication system for Food Service industry supply chain
Brenda Borowski '07/Mind Body Life Fitness/holistic, customized physical health training for high net worth clientele
Andrea Lyons '89 /Bring Back Desire/online social networking site for women 40-65

The Competition, open exclusively to Simmons School of Management MBA alumnae and current students, is designed to support women in launching innovative and successful ventures that have an impact. All semi-finalists receive valuable advising on their plans including one-on-one feedback from experienced coaches such as successful entrepreneurs, capital providers, and communication experts. The winner and the other two finalists, in addition to being eligible for the $10,000 prize and an array of business development service awards, are given a one year committee of customized coaching support from the Entrepreneurship Program’s extensive network of business professionals.

And so we continue on our mission -- to connect, advise and educate women as they launch scalable, sustainable ventures with impact.

Hope to see you on the 3rd!

Warm regards,
Teresa Nelson

A Message from Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands

Building our Academic Reputation

A school’s academic reputation is built by the success of its graduates, the quality and relevance of its educational programs, and the contributions that its faculty makes to advancing knowledge and practice in the field. As dean, I have set enhancing our academic reputation and the value of the Simmons MBA degree as a central priority. We are seeing excellent results.

Quality of graduates: On August 8 we graduated a stellar MBA Class who came to us with strong GMATs, GPAs, and an average of over seven years of work experience in a wide range of industries and functions. Our students demanded rigor, excelled in the classroom, and are now landing great MBA-level jobs in top quality organizations such as Bank of America, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Trinity Partners Consulting, and 3M. We are building our brand through the quality of students we are graduating. And, we are sustaining our founding vision of supporting women to transform their careers and their lives – a woman who enters the SOM as a dental hygienist secures a job in corporate training at a Fortune 100 company; a publishing professional lands a job as a financial analyst in a large non-profit; a research analyst from India wins a job as a business analyst in a highly regarded boutique consulting firm in the pharmaceutical area; a sales woman competes nationally and is accepted into Bank of America’s prestigious management development program; and a management trainee in the hospitality industry from Zimbabwe joins the Braver Group accounting firm as a staff auditor and she prepares for her CPA exam.

I thank those of you who referred high quality students to our program – it makes all the difference in building a strong class – and those of you who are helping our students secure top quality jobs.

Quality of programs: We have replaced our 11-month fulltime program with a more robust 16-month program. The new program continues to provide the advantages of acceleration, but offers enhanced opportunities for internships, study abroad, and in-depth study through advanced electives. More broadly, the entire accreditation process with the Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) is designed to ensure strength and relevance in our academic programs. Associate Dean Deborah Marlino, senior faculty members, and I spent much of the summer preparing our comprehensive self-evaluation report which we submitted to AACSB on August 1. Reading the full report, I am very impressed with the quality of our programs, their impact on students, and the career outcomes of our alumnae. The peer review team comes in February 2009 and I am optimistic that they will agree with our assessment.

Quality of scholarship: Our faculty members are active contributors to advancing knowledge in the field of management. In the past academic year alone, they published more than 100 peer reviewed publications and made over 80 presentations of research papers at academic conferences and in the business community. They organized doctoral consortia, served as research mentors to Ph.D. students in other universities, and published teaching cases. Our faculty members are committed to making their research relevant to managers and disseminating it within the world of practice. Over 122,000 of our CGO Insights -- briefing papers summarizing our research for managers as well as academics -- were downloaded from our website.

Much of the faculty’s research and participation in academic conferences is supported by major gifts from SOM alumnae and your individual gifts to the annual fund. I want you to know that your support is making a difference every day as we build academic excellence and the reputation of our School of Management.

As always, I welcome your comments and feedback at somdean@simmons.edu.

Best,

Visit the New Alumnet

Simmons recently launched a redesigned Alumnet – the online community for alumnae/i. Based on feedback from alumnae/i, the site is more user-friendly and now boasts new features you requested.

The new site includes all features from the previous site, plus several new additions, such as:

calendars specific to each regional alumnae/i group in both a list and traditional calendar format
class notes sorted by school and class year, and
customized personal pages

The class notes section has also been updated. Alumnae/i will continue to be able to sort online class notes by school as well as by class year. New fields for searching include maiden name and company name. Class notes are also now included in each registered user’s personal page.

The personal pages, similar to a Facebook or MySpace page, also allow alumnae/i to post photos and include the various groups and affiliations the individual is associated with.

Be sure to visit Alumnet now for the latest in alumnae/i news and alumnae/i events to experience all these exciting features.

Volunteer for the SOM
MBA alumnae volunteers are always needed to help with admissions, offering internships, and speaking to MBA students in select classes. If you would like to become involved, please contact the Office of Alumnae Relations at 617.521.2315 or email somalum@simmons.edu.

Live Outside the Greater Boston Area? Plan an Event in Your Region
The SOMAA and Office of Development and Alumnae Relations encourage alumnae to network in their regions. To support this and to maximize the number of events that occur, the SOMAA's general practice is to offer a financial subsidy (rather than underwriting the entire cost) for alumnae organized events. However, the SOMAA is willing to fully underwrite the cost of regional “kick-off” events - the first event in any region to bring local alumnae together. In The News http://www.simmons.edu/enews/someNewsletter/2008/09/in_the_news.php Simmons SOM Entrepreneurship Program Named One of Nation's Best by Entrepreneur and Princeton Review Survey Ranking of 2,300 Schools
The SOM's graduate entrepreneurship program in Boston has been named one of the 25 best programs in the nation by Entrepreneur magazine and The Princeton Review, which jointly surveyed more than 2,300 schools. The Simmons entrepreneurship program was ranked 22nd on the list of top 25 programs nationally in the graduate program category. The ranking will appear in the October issue of Entrepreneur magazine, which goes on sale at newsstands Sept. 23, 2008.

"We're very proud of our national recognition," said Simmons School of Management Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands. "We've built a dynamic program with an innovative curriculum and active engagement of entrepreneurs and associated professionals that ensures a real-world, intense learning experiences for students who want to launch and grow new ventures. SOM featured in Financial Timeas as a Pioneer in Graduate Business School Education
The September 1, 2008 Financial Times article “An MBA with the Glass Ceiling in its Sights” by Rebecca Knight. highlights the SOM has the first, and until recently, the only - MBA program targeted specifically at women. The SOM’s curriculum is stated as being a standard Management course load, with additional lessons in how gender affects organizational behavior. The goal of the program is to create "principled leaders" who align social and ethical responsibility with profitability in their business strategy.

SOM and Prof. Deborah Kolb quoted in Forbes.com
Deborah Kolb, the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor of Women and Leadership at the SOM, is quoted in a July 21, 2008 article “How to Bargain at Retail” by Janine Poggi, which examines bargaining during tough economic times. Kolb is quoted as saying: "Especially in this gloomy economic climate where people are hesitant to shop, retailers are much more eager to move merchandise….The performance of store managers is often based on how well they sell merchandise. Sometimes their best alternative is to sell the item to you at a discounted rate rather than have it sitting there and eventually go on clearance." She further states, "You need to be indifferent towards whether or not you succeed or fail…If you really want the item, it is less likely you will leave the store without it--even if it means paying full price. You need to be willing to walk away."

SOM Faculty Paper Cited in Wall Street Journal Article
The article “Misunderstanding the Chinese Worker” by Kathryn King-Metters and Richard Metters from the July 7, 2008 Wall Street Journal cites the paper entitled “Unexpected Connections: Considering Employees' Personal Lives Can Revitalize Your Business” by Lotte Bailyn, Joyce K. Fletcher and Deborah Kolb (Summer 1997) for “further reading."

SOM Faculty Member Lynda Moore Speaks at First Arab International Women's Forum
On June 22-24, 2008, SOM faculty member Lynda Moore spoke at the first Arab International Women’s Forum held in the U.S. The event was covered by Business Intelligence Middle East in the article “Arab International Women’s Forum to Host First US Conference” by Maria Karam published June 22, 2008. The conference, entitled 'Partners for Change: Realizing the Potential of Arab Women in the Private and Public Sector’ was co-sponsored by World Bank and included talks given by prominent world figures such as Robert Zoellick, President of the World Bank; Haifa Fahoum Al Kaylani, Chairman, Arab International Women’s Forum, HE Hala Bsesio Latouf, Minister of Social Development, Jordan; HE Bahia Hariri, Member of Parliament, Lebanon, and many more.

The two day event took place in Washington D.C. and stressed the importance of education as the most effective means to overcoming socio-economic challenges and barriers. It encouraged dialogues on the Arab women’s role in making the Millennium Development Goals a reality.

SOMAA Membership Dues Officially Gone!
You don’t have to pay your School of Management Alumnae Association dues this year! At this year’s annual meeting on June 16th, the board announced its decision to eliminate the organization’s membership dues structure. The board reached this decision after extensive consultation with members of the SOM alumnae community, former members of the board, Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands and Lorita Williams, Executive Director of Alumnae/i Relations at Simmons College. The board also researched how other alumnae/i associations are structured and sought legal counsel regarding the organization’s 501(c)3 status. Simmons College Office of Alumnae/i Relations (OAR) will financially and operationally support SOMAA’s programs and activities; thereby enabling the Board to focus more of its time and energy on alumnae engagement and advocacy and play a strategic role in aligning the needs of the SOM alumnae community with the school. The board recognized the impact the dues structure had on the organization and the alumnae community and is excited to put their energy into better serving the SOM alumnae community.

The SOMAA will, however, maintain its non-profit status as an independent organization but will not utilize dues to support its operations. Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands congratulates the SOMAA board on its extensive consultation with stakeholders and the thoughtfulness with which the board made this decision and is looking forward to working with the board it this newly configured partnership. SOMAA President Joan Tomaceski '91, and members of the board believe that this move further demonstrates the Dean’s commitment as well as the College’s to serving the needs of the SOM Alumnae community. "At the center of all of our discussions with the Dean, OAR staff at Simmons College, and our fellow alumnae, was a focus on strengthening alumnae engagement and preserving the unique voice of SOM alumnae," noted Tomaceski on the decision.

SOMAA Launches the SOMAA Award for Principled Leadership
Starting this year and for the next ten years, a $1,000 award (divided between a day and an evening student) will be given for students best exemplifying the values of Principled Leadership, as nominated by their peers and faculty. This award is a wonderful recognition of the school’s commitment to principled leadership and the strong relationship between the SOM and the Alumnae Association. This award will be given at the Dean's Reception the night before graduation. We are proud to announce that this year Class of 2008 awardees are Erin McFee and Heather Jean MacNeil.

Purpose of the Award
The purpose of the SOMAA award for principled leadership is to support the mission of the School of Management and recognize two students who through their school and work activities demonstrate the core components of principled leadership.

Criteria for Award
Nominations should include details about how the nominee has demonstrated principled leadership through involvement or success at the SOM, professional work, and/or volunteer commitments. The following areas are just some of the ways in which nominees may have shown principled leadership:

• Courage in making difficult decisions and choosing an ethical course of action for her organization or within the SOM
• Leadership in integrating social responsibility and business strategy and practice
• Leadership in social and environmental concerns at the SOM or outside
• Commitment to “green” initiatives, such as energy and water conservation, use of recycled materials
• Fostering equitable and inclusive workplaces that address gender and diversity dynamics
