October 3rd: Alumnae Present in the Silverman Business Plan Competition Finals

Our Entrepreneurship Program Ranked in Top 25 Nationally by Entrepreneurship Magazine

Hello, all:

Extraordinarily good news this month as we celebrate being recognized by Entrepreneur Magazine as a top 25 graduate program in the U.S. And part of the reason we are so recognized is the great co-curricular program that has been built for new venture development at the SOM, including the Silverman Business Plan Competition.

Please join our community on October 3, 2008 (4:00 pm -6:00 pm, with reception to follow) for the 3rd annual Silverman Business Plan Competition (to be held in the Mockler Caseroom Building). This year’s finalists are SOM alumnae:

Heatherjean MacNeil, Founder of Proxy – Fashion forward, fair trade clothing for Gen Y (MBA and Certificate in Entrepreneurship ’08)

Vangile Makwakwa, Founder of Speak2BFree – a global, online slam poetry site (MBA and Certificate in Entrepreneurship ’08)

Jennifer Morris, Founder of LocalWatt – Plug-in systems for electric cars (MBA ’07 and Certificate in Entrepreneurship ’08)

RSVP here soon: http://www.simmons.edu/som/centers/entrepreneurship/silverman.shtml

I also want to congratulate and recognize the other 4 semi-finalists – we look forward to working with Janine, Brenda, Caroline and Ande as they move their businesses forward.

Janine Dailey '09/Street Peace/urban gear with a message
Caroline Perkins '83 /Speak Food Service/online communication system for Food Service industry supply chain
Brenda Borowski '07/Mind Body Life Fitness/holistic, customized physical health training for high net worth clientele
Andrea Lyons '89 /Bring Back Desire/online social networking site for women 40-65

The Competition, open exclusively to Simmons School of Management MBA alumnae and current students, is designed to support women in launching innovative and successful ventures that have an impact. All semi-finalists receive valuable advising on their plans including one-on-one feedback from experienced coaches such as successful entrepreneurs, capital providers, and communication experts. The winner and the other two finalists, in addition to being eligible for the $10,000 prize and an array of business development service awards, are given a one year committee of customized coaching support from the Entrepreneurship Program’s extensive network of business professionals.

And so we continue on our mission -- to connect, advise and educate women as they launch scalable, sustainable ventures with impact.

Hope to see you on the 3rd!

Warm regards,
Teresa Nelson

The School of Management thanks Lois Silverman, founder of CRA Managed Care (now Concentra Managed Care), and founding chair of The Commonwealth Institute, for her generous gift and support, which makes the Silverman Business Plan Competition possible. We are also appreciative of the MBA Class of 2002 for their generous support of this business plan initiative.
