One of the standout speakers from the Simmons Leadership Conference this year was Meg Whitman. I was impressed by the candor with which she shared her takeaways from her unsuccessful political campaign and the leadership lessons that she has learned. Here are a few that really resonated for me:
- There are many ways to be a great leader. What they all have in common is that you have to be true to yourself and your values.
- It's all about the team, so you need to get the right people in the right jobs at the right time.
- You have to focus and do a small number of things really well.
- The price of inaction is far greater than the price of a mistake.
Sessions like this one always inspire me to examine my own leadership journey and think about how I can be a more effective leader. The Leadership Conference also marks the release of new research; this year's report is on the effectiveness of women's networking groups.
