How to Use Personal Branding to Drive Performance and Profit

Sue Hodgkinson“Everyone has a brand at work. Your boss, your colleagues, your directs, and you. And just like the strongest product and corporate brands, strong personal brands are not an accident. They are the ongoing result of intelligent brand management--a close relationship with the market, a clear definition of the value proposition and how to evolve it, and the deliberate and strategic management of awareness levels with those in positions of power and influence”.

Sue Hodgkinson, Principal of The Personal Brand Companysm

Take our online quiz to find out how “brand powerful” you are.

We are delighted to feature SOM alumna, Sue Hodgkinson, in Creating a Powerful Personal Brand on May 19th, 2009.

According to Sue, a powerful personal brand not only enhances your leadership potential, it is directly related to performance and profit.  And she finds it especially important now as: “employees need to advocate for themselves as organizations make tough decisions about talent in this challenging economic climate.”

Hodgkinson, well known for her popular “Creating a Powerful Personal Brand” Leadership  Development Program at the SOM and author of The Leader’s Edge: Using Personal Branding to Drive Performance and Profit, helps executives identify their personal brand or reputation and teaches them how to manage it for leadership success.

A recent program participant remarked: “During a very challenging period of transformation at my former employer, when many changes in leadership necessitated the forging of new relationships, I was able to use the "brand" skills I learned at Simmons and apply them directly to the situation. In particular, I crafted the kind of brief description of my skills and attributes that I was able to successfully use in building relationships with new leaders. These skills also proved useful as I searched for new employment, and were very useful in landing my new job.”

In her upcoming program at the SOM, Sue will help participants to identify their personal brand or reputation, as well as potential derailers that may hold them back.  Working with this knowledge, participants will refine their brand message and develop clear action steps and strategies to effectively advocate for themselves and their teams.

“A personal brand can help you shine through as a woman and control your conversations with all your stakeholders.  Some women seem to know instinctively how to sell their ideas and strengthen their reputation, but others find it difficult: although it is well-known in many areas, branding or self-marketing is not as commonplace for those in functional areas like IT or the sciences,” finds Hodgkinson.
