Letter from Your Orientation Chair

Hello!

Let me be one of the first students to welcome you to Simmons College! My name is Katie Barker, and I am your Orientation Chair. I am from Oxford, MA, and will be a senior nursing major next year. Many things have changed since my Orientation at Simmons: the Red Sox won their second World Series in 3 years, the Celtics ended their Championship drought, the country elected a new president, and at Simmons, the new Library opened and the School of Management Building was built.

I remember being extremely nervous about making friends, registering for classes, getting to know the campus, and wondering: “How am I going to remember what all these acronyms mean?” Orientation helped me succeed with all of these. My Orientation Leader was extremely helpful and friendly; she helped learn more about Simmons, become acclimated to the new environment, and meet new friends. I am still very good friends with many of the people I met at Orientation.

One of my roles as Orientation Chair is to work with our team of Orientation Leaders. We have a fantastic team of Orientation Leaders this year who are all very excited about welcoming you to campus and helping you STEP UP TO YOUR FUTURE! Your Orientation Leader will be in touch with you throughout the summer through email and Facebook. If you are not sure who your Orientation Leader is, please contact our office by email or phone: 617-521-2429, and we will be happy to provide you with her contact information.

After being associated with Orientation for the past 4 years (including my own), the best advice I can give is this: Make the most of it!

  • Talk to as many people as you can…students, faculty and staff – Fall Orientation will be the only time besides graduation you are all together on campus without anyone else.
  • Find out about and, most importantly, use the resources at Simmons! There are endless valuable resources to help you make the most of your Simmons experience and help you succeed during your time here. This summer your Orientation Leaders will prove to be an excellent resource for information about life and academics at Simmons.
  • Attend as many information sessions as you can during Fall Orientation! This is your opportunity to find out about Simmons from current students, faculty, and staff. I know so many students who wish that they had attended one of the information sessions during Orientation, because they realized later how important that information would have been.
  • Ask questions! Orientation Leaders and other Simmons students, faculty, and staff are here to help you!

Again, welcome to Simmons! I look forward to meeting some of you at the Summer Preview Days, and everyone else in the fall!
