my earliest memory of caring about the environment was at the beach.
i was probably about 7 and there was trash in the water. disgusting.
for some reason, i felt compelled to clean it up. i went as far as pulling a diaper out of the water before my mom decided to put my health first and stop me.

today, i may not pull diapers out of the ocean (luckily, i haven't had the need to), but i still care. any of you who know me, probably know how i feel about global warming...

anyway, simmons is doing some really cool things to care for the environment.
we have a sustainability club, an environmental science major with the colleges of the fenway, and our new school of management is going to be a "green" building. dining services has even got on board with more compostable packaging materials and fair trade coffee. but, my favorite thing our school is doing is with PLA cups!

PLA (poly lactic acid) cups are compostable in 2-4 weeks, but even cooler is what the chemisty/physics liasion is doing with them. they have found a way to covert the cups into liquid form of lactic acid which can be used as a soap scum cleaner. i tried it out in a demonstration during national chemistry week, and i thought it was pretty amazing.

i wonder what we'll think of next...

from boston to the world

My number one criteria for picking a college was that it had to be in Boston.
The summer before my senior year of high school, I was taking creative writing classes at another local college, and I realized that Boston was an amazing place to be in school. There are students from all over the world living here, tons of cultural opportunities, an amazing historical legacy, and lots of fun things to do.
If you've never experienced fall in New England, that could be reason enough to come to Boston. The smell of the brisk fall air, leaves changing colors and crunching underfoot, and the fresh flavors of pumpkin and apple are some of my favorite things.
Lately, I've been really appreciating being in the vicinity of other colleges. Last week, I went to a rally at Boston University for Stand Up Against Poverty. We were part of over 38.7 million people worldwide who stood up to show their commitment to fighting poverty and accomplishing the UN Millennium Development Goals. 79 students at Simmons College were a part of that movement too.
Last night, I went to a comedy show at Harvard with a friend from BU, that benefited Kiva. Kiva is a microfinance company that allows ordinary people to help give loans to people in need in other countries. It's so easy! I was able to partner with people from Ontario, California, Florida, Tennessee, and many other places to help a woman in Nicaragua get her business off the ground. I highly recommend you check it out.

I'm so glad that I am in a place where I can learn to have a positive global impact. How cool is that?

September tends to always be a busy month for me. This is why I have been slacking in my blogging... apologies. Now, it's October and I'm back on the blog wagon. Woo-hoo!

So, many have requested that I write about a unique experience I had a couple of weeks ago. First of all, you must understand that I am a big nerd. That is why I entered a contest to win tickets to a Mandy Moore concert and passes to a meet-and-greet. You may be thinking, "Mandy Moore? Isn't she that teeny-bopper who sang 'Candy' and starred in A Walk to Remember?" She did sing that song and star in that movie, but she is definitely not a teeny-bopper anymore. She has starred in many movies since then, establishing her reputation as a successful actress, and her new album "Wild Hope" has a more mature singer-songwriter feel to it and has received critical acclaim. I highly recommend you check it out. That being said, you are probably even more convinced that I am a big nerd, but, I won the contest!

A friend and I got to go to the sound check before the show and then meet her. She was very sweet and very genuine and gorgeous. I talked to her for a few minutes then we took a picture and she signed a CD and a poster for me.

The concert was at the Paradise and it was great. Rachael Yamagata and Chris Stills were the supporting acts and both of them were very talented. I had a lot of fun.

I know that doesn't have a lot to do with Simmons, but for someone like myself who is interested in working in the music industry, it's great to be in a city like Boston where I have opportunities like this.

week one= done

So, classes started just over a week ago and things are going pretty well so far. I had to do some shuffling around to find a schedule I was comfortable with, but I really like my classes this semester. I also found out that I only need three more classes to be a political science minor, so I've decided to do that and now I'm taking a really interesting class on Congress and the President.
With the start of classes, brings the start of student activities. Last Friday, we had the annual activities fair on the residence campus quad. All different student organizations had tables set up to let people know about what they do and to give people the opportunity to get involved. I am a leader of Simmons Christian Fellowship so I was there to represent the group. Here are some pictures I took of the fair.

The last picture (of pictures) is from the SCF table. It's part of an image survey called Soularium that we use to promote spiritual discussion. We met a lot of really awesome girls at the activities fair and it's been nice to see new students at some of our group activities. I even got to meet LaShondra (one of the other bloggers) and her roommate.
As you may have read in my bio, this is my first year commuting from home. It's definitely not as convenient as living in the dorms, but I've been enjoying it. I think that since I lived on campus for my first two years and was able to establish community and learn my way around Simmons, it makes it easier to commute now. It's nice to be able to use a car, eat free food, shower without wearing shoes, and borrow my mom's clothes (she's very stylish for a mom). Plus, we get more TV channels including the Soap Network, which allows me to watch Beverly Hills 90210 on my afternoons off, like I am now...

When did blog become a verb anyways?

This blog has a lot of potential. Now I've blogged before, but I'm pretty sure it would be of little interest to anyone other than myself. It was a lot of "I did this, this, and that today." Not too exciting. I definitely would like to take this blog in a different direction.
I thought about becoming a celebrity blogger like Perez Hilton. All I would have to do is gossip about celebrities and edit pictures of them with Microsoft Paint. Then I would become a D-list celebrity myself and I could get on MTV reality shows and get free clothes from Ben Sherman. I'm pretty good at paint. See:

(That is Michael Cera [original image from tvcomedies.about.com], who you may recognize from "Superbad," but who I will always know as George Michael Bluth from "Arrested Development." If you've never seen that show, you should definitely check it out here).

Anyways, that has already been done and the perks don't sound that appealing. I think it would be best if I used this blog to share some of my experiences at Simmons. After two years here, I like to think I know a thing or two about a thing or two. I may not have all the answers to your questions about Simmons, but I would be more than happy to answer them if you leave me comments. Let me know what you want to hear about. Interviews, tours, brochures, and websites are all great resources in researching a school, but nothing beats first-hand experience.
People always tell me that I am a storyteller. Things just seem to happen to me often that make for interesting stories. I hope that in sharing these stories with you all, you can get a glimpse into life at Simmons.
