greeeeen

my earliest memory of caring about the environment was at the beach. i was probably about 7 and there was trash in the water. disgusting. for some reason, i felt compelled to clean it up. i went as far as pulling a diaper out of the water before my mom decided to put my health first and stop me.

today, i may not pull diapers out of the ocean (luckily, i haven’t had the need to), but i still care. any of you who know me, probably know how i feel about global warming…

anyway, simmons is doing some really cool things to care for the environment. we have a sustainability club, an environmental science major with the colleges of the fenway, and our new school of management is going to be a “green” building. dining services has even got on board with more compostable packaging materials and fair trade coffee. but, my favorite thing our school is doing is with PLA cups!

PLA (poly lactic acid) cups are compostable in 2-4 weeks, but even cooler is what the chemisty/physics liasion is doing with them. they have found a way to covert the cups into liquid form of lactic acid which can be used as a soap scum cleaner. i tried it out in a demonstration during national chemistry week, and i thought it was pretty amazing.

i wonder what we’ll think of next…
