October 2007 Archives

October 1, 2007

September tends to always be a busy month for me. This is why I have been slacking in my blogging… apologies. Now, it’s October and I’m back on the blog wagon. Woo-hoo!

So, many have requested that I write about a unique experience I had a couple of weeks ago. First of all, you must understand that I am a big nerd. That is why I entered a contest to win tickets to a Mandy Moore concert and passes to a meet-and-greet. You may be thinking, “Mandy Moore? Isn’t she that teeny-bopper who sang ‘Candy’ and starred in A Walk to Remember?” She did sing that song and star in that movie, but she is definitely not a teeny-bopper anymore. She has starred in many movies since then, establishing her reputation as a successful actress, and her new album “Wild Hope” has a more mature singer-songwriter feel to it and has received critical acclaim. I highly recommend you check it out. That being said, you are probably even more convinced that I am a big nerd, but, I won the contest!

A friend and I got to go to the sound check before the show and then meet her. She was very sweet and very genuine and gorgeous. I talked to her for a few minutes then we took a picture and she signed a CD and a poster for me.

The concert was at the Paradise and it was great. Rachael Yamagata and Chris Stills were the supporting acts and both of them were very talented. I had a lot of fun.

I know that doesn’t have a lot to do with Simmons, but for someone like myself who is interested in working in the music industry, it’s great to be in a city like Boston where I have opportunities like this.

from boston to the world

My number one criteria for picking a college was that it had to be in Boston. The summer before my senior year of high school, I was taking creative writing classes at another local college, and I realized that Boston was an amazing place to be in school. There are students from all over the world living here, tons of cultural opportunities, an amazing historical legacy, and lots of fun things to do. If you’ve never experienced fall in New England, that could be reason enough to come to Boston. The smell of the brisk fall air, leaves changing colors and crunching underfoot, and the fresh flavors of pumpkin and apple are some of my favorite things. Lately, I’ve been really appreciating being in the vicinity of other colleges. Last week, I went to a rally at Boston University for Stand Up Against Poverty. We were part of over 38.7 million people worldwide who stood up to show their commitment to fighting poverty and accomplishing the UN Millennium Development Goals. 79 students at Simmons College were a part of that movement too. Last night, I went to a comedy show at Harvard with a friend from BU, that benefited Kiva. Kiva is a microfinance company that allows ordinary people to help give loans to people in need in other countries. It’s so easy! I was able to partner with people from Ontario, California, Florida, Tennessee, and many other places to help a woman in Nicaragua get her business off the ground. I highly recommend you check it out. I’m so glad that I am in a place where I can learn to have a positive global impact. How cool is that?
