spring

It is finally warming up and everyone is taking full advantage of the good weather, including the animals. The squirrels are starting to come out of hiding and geese are walking around the residential campus. I cannot believe my freshman year is almost over. I just picked out my classes for next year with my advisor and I have tentatively decided my major/minors. I am thinking of majoring in communications with a double minor in photography and spanish. Next year I am taking video production (a comm class), basic photo (comm/art class), creative writing: nonfiction (english), and a directed study in piano. I am still deciding about my classes because I am not sure if I want to take creative writing if it is nonfiction. They offer a creative writing: fiction class but it is only in the spring. I am hoping the colleges of the fenway website posts the spanish classes from the other schools before my registration time because I am not interested in any of the spanish classes here. If so, I may take spanish at another school instead of creative writing: nonfiction or my directed study in piano. I am also questioning taking piano even though I have played since I was five up until this first year of college. I finished the whole suzuki series up through book 7, but I never got to have my book 7 recital which is disappointing. Now I have forgotten all the book 7 songs so I would have to relearn them. I really want to complete it though because it is the final and only book left to complete in the series of the suzuki books.

The other day I got asked to be a mentor for the M.O.S.T. program which is for multicultural students who might come to Simmons. I remember coming last year before I decided to attend Simmons and I had a great time so I am definitely going to be a host this year. I host a student overnight and we attend a play and other activities to get them aquainted with the school and the great opportunities Boston has to offer. I am excited to get perspective students involved in the Simmons community. I will be hosting my student overnight from Friday April 7 to Saturday April 8.

Communications Class with Bob W

Well I was sitting in comm media the other day, when Bob W (my wonderful teacher [the name is abbreviated because we are not allowed to mention full names to ensure safety]) asked me how my blog was going. I thought about it and realized that I have not written in my blog for awhile. He also asked me if I had written anything about him in my blog and I said I was not sure. Well, now I have. My teacher Bob W likes to wear spam t-shirts underneath his white blazer. Not only does he wear spam shirts, he hands out spam as birthday presents although for the most part no one chooses spam over “nightmare before christmas” t-shirts and plastic roses. He constantly like to replace vulgar 4 letter words with the word “confounded” which amuses me. He also likes to swirl cough drops around in his mouth while hovering above the microphone so the whole class gets to hear a splendid euphony. Another common hobby of Bob’s is “firing” his teaching assistants although they never really are expected to leave. Whenever someone sneezes he says “god bless you”, but much faster: “godblessyou”. Whenever someone coughs he says “stop that confounded noise!” Lastly, whenever someone comes in late, he shines his minuscule flashlight through the dark room to see who is disrupting the class. That is all for now. I find comm media to be my most anticipated class of the week and very entertaining indeed so I hope he is pleased with this entry.

groundhog day

Well it looks like there are 6 more weeks of winter left since the groundhog saw his shadow. You would never know from the great weather we are having in Boston today. Well this semester is going well. I changed my schedule a little. I now have Comm Media on Mon, Wed, and Fri from 10-10:50. I have MCC Racial Makeovers Wed, and Fri from 11-12:20. I have Intro Psych Tues, and Thurs from 12:30-1:50. And I have Food Science Tues, and Thurs from 2-3:20. I also have my first Food Science Lab tonight (every Thursday from 5:30-8:30) during which I heard we are making muffins. I am excited. I may have to buy a labcoat, but hopefully my teacher will let me use an apron I already own. I also have to buy a hairnet which should be interesting since I have never worn one before and don’t especially like the look of them. I am also working a lot this semester. I am still working at the phone program, this semester on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. I am also tutoring a couple students in Spanish 102 and 201 for a few hours a week and I found out that one of my tutees is also going on the Spain trip with the school in May. My two jobs plus schoolwork and attending classes is making for a busy, but fun semester thus far. I am looking forward to Spring Break because my parents and I are going to Amsterdam. We may also go to Paris for a couple of days, but we are not sure. I am very excited because I have never been to Amsterdam and I have not been to Paris for over 10 years. Well I have to go to class. Bye for now!

it has been awhile...

i have been meaning to post since thanksgiving, but everything has been so crazy. speaking of thanksgiving, it was a lot of fun. my parent’s friends and their daughter came over and we made lots of food and it was very relaxing. it even snowed on thanksgiving! we got a really big snow storm this past friday the 9th (our last day of classes), but of course the college did not decide to close until after i had my last class. it was ok though because my teacher brought italian food which was good. i went to the prudential center on friday with a few friends to finish up my christmas shopping. the fact that we are almost on break is overshadowed by exams this week. i have 3 exams…well 2 written exams and 1 oral exam. i have a written exam in museum history at 9 am on thursday and a written exam in calc 1 at 6 pm on thursday. on wednesday i have a spanish oral exam in the morning and that is it. so technically i am done whenever i finish my calc exam on thursday night. my parents are coming thursday night and we are going to hang out in the city on friday and i will go home for break on friday night. my roommate’s last exam isn’t until a week from tomorrow (monday) so she is going to be here for awhile. this semester went by so fast and i made a lot of friends and i like college a lot. when i first came her i did not think i would have as much fun as i am having and i am excited for my new classes next semester.

november

wow. i cannot believe it is already november. well i just registered for my classes for next semester. i wanted to take communications media, photo with the lab also, mcc racial makeovers, and psychology. unfortunately, the psych class and photo + lab were closed already. this is because i am a freshman and get last pick. this is also because times for registering were staggered because last year they weren’t and everyone tried to get online to register at the same time and the network froze and noone could get on. i suppose it is a good solution, but it means that most classes are closed by the time us freshmen are able to get on. well i got into mcc racial makeovers which is great because it was the most interesting looking class to me and i’m in that class with my friends vanessa, jess, and rahala. i also got into comm media which is good because i need that for my possible comm major and my friend kassia is in that class. the teacher is said to be very good also…mr. white. lots of people say he looks like dumbledore from harry potter. i did not get into photo. i am very disappointed because i wanted to take photo this fall semster but i couldn’t because of mcc. now once again mcc is conflicting with my chances for photo. i am very interested in photo so i am disappointed i cannot take it this coming semester. i did waitlist it though incase i am able to get in. in place of photo (incase i cannot get in) i picked animation which is also a comm class. it looks like fun, we get to see how cartoons are made etc. i also did not get into psych. it was already full. i waitlisted that class also. in place of that class, i signed up for a spanish fieldwork community course. it is about puerto ricans in the area and is a longer class than usual for me. it is taught in english, but deals with spanish issues and is a high level spanish course. i hope i am able to get into that class because i need the instructor’s consent and the instructor has not gotten back to me yet. i am also thinking about a major in spanish and hoping to go to granada this may with the school for a month long language course there that counts as a whole semester class. i just was in granada this past march and i liked it. we were on vacation and went to cordoba, sevilla, granada, jerez, and marbella. i would love to go back. hopefully since i have taken spanish 245, they will let me into the 380 level spanish class. so those are my classes for next term and my tentative plans for this coming early summer/late spring

winter is on the way...

Well it is getting cooler out now. It was also rainy today and the wind was very strong. I had 2 midterms today: one spanish play and an art history test. It sucks, but I only have one more midterm. Our room decorating is going well. We have yet to get bean bags though so when we do I will post pictures of the completed room. Thursday is my roommate Kori’s 19th birthday. Me and some other people are pitching in to get her a vest she wants from Gap. I also got her some earring from Macy’s. This past weekend was parent’s weekend and I had a lot of fun. We went out to eat a lot and it reminded me how much I miss real food. Bartol (the dining hall) is not so bad except it has a bad smell and whenever I come back from the dining hall people in the dorm tell me I smell like Bartol. Ew. We saw the Ansel Adams show at the MFA which was really cool and we also went to the Pumpkin Fest at the Boston Common. I am hosting a perspective student on Thursday overnight which is turning out to be a problem. I signed up to be a host before I had a job and I didn’t know what time I could be picking my guest up. It turns out I have to pick her up at 4 pm which is a problem because I have art class at the Museum of Fine Arts at 3:30. Hopefully my friend Rahala can pick her up for me. I also have to work Thursday night from 6:30-9:30 which would be boring for her so I hope I can find something fun for her to do. Well I must go do some work but I promised I would post a picture of my new haircut and bangs so here it is:

october break

well things have been really busy lately as usual. it is fall break and i am home. my parent’s friends crystal, george and their daughter kerry and her husband james are visiting this weekend. it is fun to see them and kerry and james actually live in cambridge. i got my hair cut a lot and i got bangs. i will have to post a picture. my friend vanessa came with me to my house for a few days for october break. last night i went to my high school (williston) for a sort of “homecoming” football game (although it wasn’t called homecoming) and i saw a lot of my friends from my class. a lot of graduates were invited so i saw people from my senior class as well as my friends from other grades. the only problem was that it was pouring. it looked like there were waterfalls falling from the sky. i like rain, but this was too much. and it was cold. today vanessa is going home and i have to do some work, see friends, try to find a job for when i come home on december break, and pick up an absentee ballot to vote in the november mayor elections. i am washing laundry here so i hope i don’t forget to bring anything back to the dorm. i am soooooo happy because my parents put me back on the car insurance for this weekend so i can drive! a lot of my friends have been in accidents, but i haven’t so i am lucky the insurance isn’t so high, although it is high enough to take me off of it while i am not here. i miss driving and riding in cars when i am in boston. well i am going to go do work now so l8er.

last week we were told that since our third roommate wasn’t coming, we would have the extra furniture moved out of our room. today they moved it out!!! we have a lot more space. i will take pictures of our room and post them in the next entry. i saw the movie roll bounce. it was really good…especially since bow wow was in it. this week is really hectic because i have a lot of work. i have 2 tests on thursday. i am excited for this weekend because my friend katrina is coming to visit. we are going to an ashlee simpson concert. that should be fun. last weekend i went to new york and met my friend jenny from high school. that was so much fun: we saw a movie, went out to eat, and went to the wax museum which was very cool. i have been wanting to go to the wax museum for a long time. on sunday my parents and my godparents visited and we went to get dimsum in chinatown. it was my mom’s birthday. in other news…I GOT A JOB! i am working for the phone calling program here at simmons. we call alumna/i and update them on what is going on at the college these days and ask if they want to give a gift. i start thursday and i am very excited. well i must go work so until next time…

buuuuuuuusy

this past week has been so hectic: trying to get involved, meet new people, and having so much work to do @ the same time. i am trying to get a job too, but with all my classes, i am not sure it is such a good idea. i went to college night tonight @ the museum of science. it was really fun. lots of free stuff like imax, 3d cinema (yes…different than imax), ducktour, icecream, cds. i have soooo much work to do though both in homework from books, and individual assignments like observing sights @ harvard square for a paper and writing in a journal for FYE class and doing extra exercises to study for spanish. tomorrow i have classes all day (11-4:50 straight) and will have a lot of homework. not to mention i am planning on running for student council (or hall council) so i have extra work to do to run. everyone else seems to be having boy problems but i have no time for all that. i gotta clean my room too because it turns out my 3rd roommate isn’t coming so we can get the extra furniture out of here. that is both good and bad because i have to move all my stuff, but our room will look better. when i have any moment of free time, i will post pictures because i have a lot. maybe friday night……friday seems sooooooooo far away. this is only the 2nd week????!!!!

september 4th 2005

well today all us freshmen moved in. it was eventful. we got here at 8:30 and didn’t stop unpacking and rearranging until 1…and even then i still had more unpacking to do. i am in a triple, but the size of the room is a small double. my roommate is really nice, but my other roommate did not come. we were thinking this might happen because we had tried to contact her over the summer numerous ways, but she never responded. this is both a good and bad thing. i was not looking forward to sharing such a small space with 2 people, but it would have been nice to meet someone else new. it looks like she isn’t coming at all. we are going to wait a few more days until we actually see if she is coming before we create more space in the room. it was sad to leave my parents, but i am glad i am having this experience too. i just took a shower in flip flops for the first time in my life. that was weird. well tomorrow is a big day too. now i am going to bed so i can be ready for the continuation of orientation tomorrow (that rhymes).

maine

last week i went to maine and guess what….i forgot my suitcase! i usually do not do things like that….but the good part was that i got to buy new clothes :)>

another exciting thing happened when we first got there: we were eating at this restaurant called barnacle billy’s and guess who was just leaving….president bush, his dad, and their wives. i’m not going into my political views, but it was cool to see him. i took a picture, but i was too much in shock to run around to the side to get a better view. i have come back shots.

i had a lot of fun in maine. lots of lobster and fun. we hiked down cadillac mountain, went to sand beach, the theater, camped, went to jordan pond house, and even saw the sunset on top of cadillac also (i have pictures).

sunday the 28th was my 18th birthday. i got these great lunch at the ritz piano earrings.

i also got some money and some other gifts and i registered to vote.

now i am seeing friends for the last time before i leave and packing!! it is hard getting everything together and deciding what to bring it in to take up as little space as possible.

last breath of summer

The summer is winding down and it seems like I am cramming as much fun into these last weeks as possible. I just got back from Hawaii which was amazing. I have been there before, but not to Kauai. My dad won a condo on the island from a faculty raffle at Mount Holyoke where he and my mother work. We went horse-back-riding, snorkled, hiked, and most of all relaxed. The view from the condo was great…the ocean was right there and you could see the sun rise every morning without even getting out of bed. It seems like a totally different world now that I am back here in MA. We actually stayed two extra days (but in Honolulu, not Kauai) because my mother wanted to see the house of Doris Duke in Honolulu. Doris Duke inherited her father’s wealth and (after being intrigued by the Taj Mahal on her honeymoon)spent her life collecting art from the middle east and has a mansion in Honolulu. When she was nearing the end of her life, she decided to make her mansion into a museum and so now people can visit it. The house was incredible.

2 weeks until classes start..... :)

Hey I’m Hannah and this is my first entry (and I am in Hawaii)! I have not had internet access for the past week, but now I do. My parents and I decided to stay here two more days because we are having so much fun (we have flown to Honolulu from Kauai though). I am on the hotel computer so I do not have much time, but I will write more and post pictures when I get home on Sunday August 21.
Until then!
Hannah M.
