Ethnic Night in the Dorms!
April 15, 2006
So last Saturday we had an ethnic night in the dorms since most of our roommates would be gone for the weekend (one has to entertain oneself!). Maria, Amy and I decided that we would have an ethnic night, a combination of Indian, Pakistani, Norwegian and American foods. Maria and I made an Indian dish with potatoes. She brought some kabobs her mother had made, Rhoti (a type of bread), Amy made cheese and crackers (Norwegian style) and we had apple pie with vanilla ice cream for dessert. To top it off, chai and mango juice to drink. Maria suggested that Amy and I try her Salwarkamez and Hijab’s. So the following pictures are of us all dressed up and cooking.

Never give Amy the camera…
Debbie being shy? Never!

Frying the patties
Maria washing dishes…fun!
So tired from all that cooking!
Oh! And my Japanese has come in handy. While we were out shopping for the ingredients for the dinners, I had to ask the produce worker at Shaw’s for some good Cilantro (the stuff they had out was wilted). I could tell he was Japanese, as he was talking to a customer in it. I said excuse me in Japanese and he was surprised to hear me speaking his language. He asked me if I was American, I said I was in Japanese and when I told him what I was looking for - he ran in the back to get me the “very best cilantro in the store.” It was so cool to be able to attempt to speak to someone in their own language. I could tell he appreciated it. I apperciated the experience in speaking it. And I thought it wasn’t going to do me any good. heh heh heh
Happy Easter, Passover, Weekend to everyone!
