Simmons College STANDs Against Racism
STAND Against Racism is a national day of action organized by the YWCA to raise awareness that racism still exists in our communities and we can neither ignore nor tolerate it. On April 29th, 2011, Simmons joined the national Stand with opportunities for students, alumnae, faculty and staff to participate in activities aimed at ending racism in our community. The community pledged over 350 commitments to ending racism! More information about STAND can be found at http://www.ywcaboston.org/stand-against-racism. In 2010, Simmons participated in the STAND with an anti-racist book display and a Pledge signing. Many students, faculty and staff also wore black and orange ribbons of commitment to ending racism. The 2012 STAND will take place on April 27, 2012, visit the Scott/Ross center if you are interested in coordinating or helping with the event.
Global Service Day
Annual Global Service Day took place this year on Friday, April 29th involving Simmons undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, staff and alum coming together and spend the day volunteering. Part of the 2011 campus-wide Scholarship and Service Day, Global Service Day featured on-campus visits from community partners, letter writing campaigns, and multiple activities through our YMCA STAND Against Racism events. The Simmons community volunteered together off-campus at Scott/Ross community partners such as the Animal Rescue League, the Farragut Elementary School, Cradles to Crayons, Community Servings, The Fenway CDC, The Boston Living Center, The Women's Lunch Place and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston. Alumnae/i also participated and their stories encouraged continued service with show on the Simmons radio station.
