Alternative Spring Break

The Scott/Ross Center for Community Service

Simmons students helping build communities with Habitat for Humanity

Alternative Spring Break provides students with many opportunities to participate in fun community service events throughout the Boston area. For students wishing to serve communities further afield, we partner with Habitat for Humanity to offer travel opportunities. We also sponsor a variety of projects for graduate students.

ASB: Simmons Builds travels within the United States during our spring break to build houses with Habitat for Humanity. For the past four years, the trip has been entirely student run and completely fundraised by students. To make the trip accessible, members make a small deposit and the rest of the expenses (ranging from $5,000-$10,000 in past years) are fundraised by the group. Twice, we have been awarded the Alumnae Association Centennial Grant.

The group is made up of undergraduate students who go through a three part application process. Past trip destinations include Harrisburg, PA, St. Petersburg, FL, Hattiesburg, MS and Pittsburgh, PA. In the past 4 years, we have done the demolition, tearing our floor and removing beams, for restorations, done interior and exterior framing, raised roofs, secured beams, insulated walls, installed windows, completed drainage, constructed porches, used power tools, and met and bonded with 5 familes in 4 communities.

ASB: Simmons Builds changes the students who go on the trip, the familes we work with, and the Simmons Community we return to.
