Summer Fun

Are you off for the summer? Is it slow in the summer? These are questions we are asked often in the S/RC. Summer definitely runs on a different pace. Fewer students dropping by, major planning time for the academic year, welcoming new students via orientations, catching up with community partners.

We also facilitate and host several youth summer programs. These summer programs such as Mission Safe, Sociedad Latina, Beacon Academy, and Girls Leap partner with us during the year - our Simmons students serve as tutors, mentors and facilitators. During the summer, a couple hundred young people from all over the city come to campus to participate in one of the above programs. You see them learning about digital photography, dance, and community building among other things. They also spend time honing their academic skills. They bring energy and frisbee to the quad during lunch time. Being on campus gives some of them their first exposure to college life. We enjoy having them and they keep us busy and we appreciate the support and assistance from other Simmons staff and departments on making this work.

In addition, we launched the S/RC Fellowship in Nonprofit Management. Three Simmons students completed their eight week summer placements at the Boston Foundation and various community partners around the city (more about this later) exploring the nonprofit sector and providing valuable insight and skills to their partners.

Other S/RC summer activities - we led a service-learning workshop for University of the MIddle East High School Teachers, attended a conference at Elon, co-partnered with Sociedad Latina to secure four Commonwealth Corps Members (all Simmons students) to assist with their summer program on campus and will shortly kick-off our 2011-2012 Americorp Student Leaders in Service program.

Summer has been anything but slow!
